Show Topic: Pelvic Congestion Women and Testicular Issues in Men with Special Guest Dr. Danny Chan

Co-Hosts: Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guest: Danny Chan, MD in studio

Segment 1

Today’s show has a little something for the women and a little something for the men. If you’re a female with undiagnosed or misdiagnosed pelvic pain or a man with testicular issues, you’ll want to stick around the entire hour as we visit with Dr. Danny Chan from Precision Vascular and Interventional Radiology in Dallas.

Bio: Dr. Chan earned his M.D. at St. Louis University School of Medicine. He went on to complete a General Surgery Internship at New York Medical College, Westchester County Medical Center and a Diagnostic Radiology Residency at Lenox Hill Hospital, New York City. Dr. Chan is Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Radiology and in Vascular and Interventional Radiology. He has an additional Registered Physician Vascular Interpreter (RPVI) certification. He received his MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2012.

  • For our listeners, what is interventional radiology?

Dr. Chan was an Assistant Professor, Dept. of Radiology, Division of Interventional Radiology, at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and was Medical Director of the Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory at St. Paul University Hospital, Dallas for many years before co-founding Precision VIR.

  • What role does modern technology play in your field of study? Briefly – are treatments easier to perform and diagnosis easier to determine overall?

NOTE – DISCUSS TREATMENT OPTIONS and SPECIFICS IN THE NEXT SEGMENT

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM)

THAT MUSIC MEANS IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

We all remember when the WHI study came out on women and hormones. Looks like now, after a review of the data, they are backtracking quite a bit. Not only are they reversing some of their concerns on safety, the The North American Menopause Society (NAMS)is now saying the hormone replacement therapy may be a safe and effective treatment for migraine suffers under the age of 60.

It can be incredibly powerful to put kids in charge of their own health. Give them the reigns at dinner, let them have the power to create healthy food for themselves. Have children make a potato fixin’s bar by choosing their own toppings for half a baked potato. Arrange separate bowls and serving utensils for refried beans, black-eyed peas, chopped chicken tenders, shredded low-fat cheese, sliced cherry tomatoes, thinly chopped spinach, and grated carrots for children to build their own baked potato. It so important to cook together too. Allow children to learn about foods by letting them help prepare them. By teaching your kids the value of cooking at home and family meal time is something that will also bless your children’s children. We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. Adults need to be smart in their protein choices so we can get the most out of what we eat. Studies suggest that our choices in protein aren’t the best. For example hamburgers and hot dogs are not the best options. Start with lean choices for meat and meat alternates, these will give you high protein with less fat. Don’t make the mistake of adding cream sauces, butter, and gravy to your meats – that just adds calories, fat, and carbs. If you cook at home, be sure to trim the fat before you cook, that keeps the fat from seeping into the meat. You can keep your meat healthy by searing it first to hold the natural juices and keep it tender. We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. Did you know children should eat a variety of meat and meat alternates each week? Well a new studies suggest they should! These foods include fish, shellfish, dry beans and peas, nuts, and seeds, as well as lean meats, poultry, and eggs. New York University recently said that most children 2 years and older do not consume enough protein. Their bodies need protein to grow. Fish, shellfish, beans and peas can also be a great source of protein. Even peanut butter contains protein. Remember that proteins are building blocks for a stronger, healthier, and happier body. A leading pediatrician in the field of preventative medicine suggest that making food fun may be the key to setting up good food practices. Dr. Anderson Lee suggested you serve things like “Shark Pockets” (stuff half a whole-wheat pita pocket with canned light tuna, spinach, shredded carrots, and a little salad dressing). You could also try “Peanut Butter Roll-Ups” (spread a thin layer of peanut butter on a small whole-grain tortilla, top with grated carrots, and roll it). Food and beverage companies use extra sugar and colorful marketing to reel kiddos in. All those extra calories are empty calories, leaving our children with a lack of nutrients. Added sugars make it hard for children to maintain a healthy weight and a healthy brain. Since fruits are naturally sweet, it can be easy to get children to eat them without adding sweeteners like sugar, corn syrup, and honey. Serve your kids fresh fruit rather than dried or the fruit snack version---cut pieces into funny shapes or a cool design to draw in the little ones. And remember, berries have high nutritional content and pears are low on the glycemic index. Good nutrition makes for smarter and happier kids.We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. It has not yet been determined if those changes are good or bad, more research will be completed to determine that.

Having flakes on your collar? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. If you suffer from a flakey scalp it could be due to dry skin or an overgrowth of fungus on the scalp. Dandruff shampoos are readily available, but they can be expensive or smell bad. There are a few home remedies you could try first. Almost everyone has apple cider vinegar in the pantry, but maybe more of us should have it in the shower. The acidity can change the PH of the scalp making it hard for fungus to grow and flake off. Another great way to shed the flakes is to put two crushed up aspirins in your shampoo. Believe it or not, aspirin has the same active ingredient as many dandruff shampoos. And while baking soda is another great way to cleanse the scalp, if you use it be sure to follow it with a little tea tree oil so your hair doesn’t dry out. Remember, some of the best natural cures are right there in your pantry. Did you know your dry skin could be from something you’re eating? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. People don’t usually think food allergies when it comes to skin irritations. Unfortunately, they can go through life with dry skin or pesky itching and figure that’s just a fact of life, but it doesn’t have to be. Common foods like dairy, corn, wheat, or nuts could be the culprit. Food allergies don’t always cause the fatal reactions that we most commonly associate an allergy with. Chronic exposure to foods you are allergic to or sensitive to can cause long term inflammation. While there are tests for food allergies, you can also try simply eliminating things from your diet. Take food items out one at a time, but be sure to read labels so you aren’t getting trace amounts. Then reintroduce them slowly, one by one. Eventually, you may just find your answer and get relief from those skin issues. For more tips like this one, go to Stay Young America.com where you can pick up a copy of my book Stay Young: 10 Proven Steps to Ultimate Health. That’s Stay Young America.com
