Doc Shock

New term in the cardiovascular world came out in JAMA. It’s called cardio vascular preconditioning. It’s really just a fancy new word for exercise, but the important part is that exercise, even a single session has cardiovascular benefits. Each time the hart is put under the stress of exercise it experiences short episodes of ischemia, a term that means inadequate supply of blood to the heart. Repeated planned ischemic episodes, aka your daily or weekly exercise, prepares the heart to better handle a cardiac event where the heart may have a longer episode of blood flow interruption.

Is happiness on your New Year’s wish list? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Being happier seems to be a trending goal as we enter this new year, but keep in mind that happiness is often the result of action. There are three things that you can do on a daily basis that are scientifically proven to improve your happiness level. First, exercise each day. Don’t say you don’t have time. Make time. At the bare minimum take a brisk 30 minute walk. Second, improve your sleep quality and quantity. Seven and a half hours of uninterrupted sleep is best. Third, say something nice to at least one person each day. If you catch yourself being negative, shut those thoughts down. Happy thoughts lead to happy actions. This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, an international leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Visit www.EMTexas.com for more information. This is Judy Gaman, author of the award winning book Age to Perfection: How to Thrive to 100, Happy, Healthy, and Wise and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Each day I bring you one new tip that will help you stay young and vibrant. I heard a comment over the holidays that really struck me. One of my family members said brown sugar was healthier than regular white sugar. Well, Sugar that's the color of dirt doesn't make it more "natural" or healthier than its white counterpart. The color comes from a common residual sticky syrup, called molasses. Brown sugar retains some of that molasses. In fact, brown sugar is mostly white sugar with some molasses — so refining it further would give you white table sugar. While molasses contains some vitamins and minerals like potassium and magnesium, there is not enough in your standard brown sugar packet that should make you reach for it if you're trying to eat healthier. As far as your body is concerned, white and brown sugar are one-in-the-same.We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. Each day I bring you one new tip that will help you stay young and vibrant. Here’s an interesting health fact. Did you know There's no evidence that going outside with wet hair when it's freezing will make you sick provided you avoid hypothermia. But there is a scientifically sound explanation for why people catch more colds in winter: We spend more time in close quarters indoors, it is more likely that we'll cross paths with a cold-causing virus spread from another person during the winter. We want to empower you with as much health information as possible.
