Could your grandchildren help you live longer? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. I personally have four grandchildren that keep me on my toes. I didn’t need a study to tell me how young they make me feel, but new research published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior shows that grandparents who spend time with their grandchildren on a regular basis had a 37% lower risk of dying compared to grandparents in the study who did not spend time with them. The researchers felt that it was partially due to the increased activity. We all know those little guys can keep up running, but it could be something more. I wouldn’t be surprised if they discovered a chemical reaction in our brains that makes us want to stick around and watch them grow up. If you have grandchildren, be sure to get a little more time in with them – it may just help you live a longer and healthier life. Is antibacterial soap necessary? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Probably about a decade or two ago, anti-bacterial soaps and hand sanitizers became extremely popular. The idea was to kill off as may bacteria as possible. The problem was that it also killed off the good bacteria and new research shows that an obsession with hand sanitizer could lead to a thyroid disorder. So what are we to do? Well, good hand washing techniques are just as effective without the bad side effects. Start with water, and believe it or not the temperature of the water doesn’t matter. Then add soap and lather for at least twenty seconds. Be sure to rub between the fingers and get the soapy water under the fingernails. Then rinse and dry. Not only will this help you ward off colds and the flu, it can also protect you against stomach bugs. This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a global leader in preventative and proactive health. MEDICAL TRIVIA  - Mark

(True. surgeons, who perform delicate operations generally do so in quiet. Even small sounds can cause their pupils to change focus and blur their vision, making it harder to do their job.)

  1. What day of the week is someone most likely to have a heart attack?

(A ten year study in Scotland found that 20% more people die of heart attacks on Mondays than any other day of the week.)

  1. Which can people go longer without – food or sleep

(Food. As long as someone has water, they can go up to a month without food granted they have a normal body size. The longest anyone has ever lived without sleep is 11 days. Just missing 2 days of sleep can cause significant neurological and physical problems)

  1. Are we taller in the morning, evening, or the same height all day?

(In the morning we are roughly 1 cm taller)

  1. What gives lips the pink color and blue color when cold?

(Capillaries close to the surface of the skin, but when cold they constrict, limiting oxygen and changing the color. )

Open discussion – what did we learn from today? Also – interesting cases of the week?

How often are you holding hands with your spouse? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. In today’s rush-rush world we can forget to stop and hold the hand of our spouse or significant other. Not holding hands could be a big mistake. Some studies show that couples that hold hands have a stronger bond. That may be because our skin has receptors that increase our levels of oxytocin, the love hormone, when activated through touch. This hormone also helps provide comfort and reduce levels of stress. Next time you are walking with your loved one, or simply watching a movie together, hold hands. Make it a habit to touch each other as often as possible. If your significant other is going through a particular stressful time at work or otherwise, be sure to give them extra support by rubbing their arms or back. Did you know that long term relationships may be a matter of hormonal attraction? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. When we fall in love we get the butterflies in our stomach and dizzy with infatuation. This is due to the release of cortisol and a drop in serotonin. While these feelings even out over time, it doesn’t mean you have fallen out of love. Just the opposite, it means your body is balancing it’s hormones. Sticking with a loving relationship has its benefits. Even those that have been married fifty years experience oxytocin and vasopressin spikes when talking or thinking about their loved one. It’s these hormones that strengthen the bond. Need another reason to stay together? Many studies support the fact that married people live longer and healthier lives. Do you suffer from indigestion? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. New research shows that common prescription and over the counter medications that are often taken for indigestion can actually lead to kidney damage. If you suffer from indigestion, perhaps you should consider using common foods to change the acidity of your stomach acid. Try having cucumber slices as a snack throughout the day, or sipping on cucumber infused water. Broccoli, either steamed or raw may also help. Cold milk has long been used to ease stomach pain from indigestion, but dairy is not indicated for stomach pain associated with an illness. Root vegetables like radishes can also help with acid reflux. Bottom line, if you can find a cure in your pantry or fridge, start there. New research shows that migraine sufferers have an increased risks of cardiovascular problems including heart attacks, stroke, blood clots and an irregular heart rate. A large study conducted by Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark and Stanford University here in the US looked at over a half million people, both migraine sufferers and non-migraine sufferers. For every 1,000 patients, 25 patients with migraine had a heart attack compared with 17 migraine free patients and 45 patients with migraine had a blood clot related stroke compared with 25 migraine free patients. The findings prove that a history of migraine headaches should be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and events.

Vitamin D-3 is known to help with bone health, but did you know that it can also aid in cardiovascular health?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  A new study from scientists at Ohio University found that Vitamin D-3 can aid in heart health.  The research showed that Vitamin D-3 is absorbed in the cells lining your organs.  This lining plays a key role in regulating blood pressure, tumor growth, and even blood sugar.  Vitamin D-3 restores and protects this lining, helping to reverse heart damage.  Although, Vitamin D-3 can’t reverse a heart attack, it can help prevent one.  It’s important to have your Vitamin D levels checked when you visit the doctor and if low, obtain proper supplementation.  This tip on heart health is brought to you by the Stay Young Vitamin line, a pharmaceutical grade supplement line that specializes in supplements that are gluten free, dairy free, and non-GMO. How social are you? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Are you likely to talk to the mailman, or visit with your checker at the grocery store? If so, you might live quite a long time. New research out of BYU shows that social integration is at the top of the list when it comes to longevity predictors. It actually beats diet and exercise. It’s important to have social time with your close friends and family, but it is equally important to be social with those that you meet infrequently. If you really want to increase your chances for a longer life, seek out more social interaction. You can do this by joining a book club or taking a new class. Prior to this study, we long knew the dangers of becoming what we refer to as a “shut in” – someone who rarely goes out. Now this new research points out that we should proactively look for friends and situations to share conversation. If you know someone who’s not getting enough interaction, reach out, be that social contact for them. Five Spanish universities and more than 300,000 female volunteers participated in a European investigation that is now confirming that alcohol intake increases the chances of developing breast cancer. This risk quadruples with the intake of each daily glass of wine or beer. 334,850 women between the ages of 35 and 70 from ten European countries participated in a study completed by an international team of researchers. 11,576 females were diagnosed with breast cancer over the course of the eleven-year monitoring study. According to the results, woman's average risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer increases by 4% with each additional 10 grams/day of alcohol.
