MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM) THAT MUSIC MEANS ITS TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

New research on e-cigarettes is making the news.  University of California, San Francisco looked at the danger to teens. While e-cigarettes were meant to be a way to wean adults off regular cigarettes, it appears to be a gateway for teens that leads to smoking and drug use. They found that teens can also become addicted to e-cigarettes, but that is not the worst of it. They looked at 104 teens with an average age of just over 16 years. 67 were e-cigarette users, 17 used e-cigarettes as well as traditional cigarettes, and 20 did not smoke or vape and were used as the controls. Teenagers who vaped had a three times higher concentration of toxic compounds in their bodies. In the case of teenagers who used both tobacco cigarettes and e-cigarettes, the concentration of toxic chemicals in the body was an additional three times higher than those who only vaped. It seems to have a compounding affect. It also turns out that some of these flavors, though FDA approved in their natural state become carcinogenic when they’re heated.

Did you know you can stop diabetes before it starts? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Diabetes is on the rise with younger and younger cases of type two diabetes each year. This is such a debilitating disease, yet it’s so preventable. The first step is to know your numbers. Not just your fasting glucose, which gives and immediate reading of your current blood sugar, but you should have a yearly A1C, a test that gives an average blood sugar over the course of the last three months. If your A1C is in the pre-diabetic state, there is so much you can do to prevent your body from ever developing diabetes. First, increase your exercise to 3 to 4 times a week and include cardio. Next, avoid all processed and packaged foods as well as fried foods. You also need to increase your number of vegetables, eating many of them raw. Changes now will save you years of heartache down the road. This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive health. Before you take antibiotics, there’s a few things you need to know. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Anti-biotic use skyrocketed over the years, with doctors prescribing them and patients requesting them in record numbers. This over prescribing has led to super bugs, germs that are unaffected by most of the treatments we have today. It’s also caused patients to have less options for even the most common illnesses. Before you fill and take an antibiotics ask the right questions, keeping in mind that viruses do not respond to anti-biotics. Also, get a good and clear understanding of the side effects. For example, a class of drugs called quinolones are contraindicated for athletes and active individuals because they can lead to tendon tears, yet many doctors prescribe them without giving the patients proper warning. If you have allergies to particular antibiotics, let your relatives know. They may be the point of contact in the case of an emergency. Heart disease is the number one killer in America. Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic have shown that gut health may play a big role. We knew olive oil was good for us, but it turns out that some cold pressed olive oils may be responsible for inhibiting a gut metabolite called TMAO that is formed when we digest animal products. Like how statins work for lowering cholesterol, researchers have some inside into how to keep the gut healthy and prevent gut induced heart disease.

Do you suffer from restless leg syndrome? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. If you suffer from restless legs, you’re not alone 7-10 percent of Americans are affected. This condition is best described as pain in the legs or the feeling of uneasiness of tingling, often in the evening or during the night. Some of the best things you can do to prevent it is to exercise daily. Also, reducing your body weight will help curb the symptoms. Also, forgo that glass of wine since alcohol can make symptoms worse. While there are medications that your doctor can prescribe, some people see relieve from taking iron supplements and soaking in a warm tub at night just before bed. Because restless leg syndrome can be a symptom of other health concerns, it’s always best to have a complete work up with your physician. Do you know your waist to height ratio? You should. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. New research out of Latin America suggests that anxiety is higher in women with larger waist to height ratios. They studied 5,580 women with a mean age of 49.7 years. 58 percent were postmenopausal, and 61.3 percent reported anxiety issues. I don’t think they actually needed a study to tell us that a large waist in women is a risk factor for anxiety. When you look at the age studied and consider menopause, of course the risk for anxiety goes up. Furthermore, smaller waist size usually indicates a more active lifestyle. We all know that exercise decreases anxiety. This study only confirms that we already know, hormone balance and exercise curb anxiety, as well as keep your body lean. Show Topic: Nutrition in the News

Co-Hosts:  Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guest: none

Segment 1

Intro – 30 sec.

Everyone wants to eat healthy and live longer. There have been so many new studies that have emerged on nutrition that we decided to talk about nutrition in the news – what you need to know.

  • Prebiotics, Probiotics, and anti-biotics. Manipulating the gut biome showed that a disturbance in the gut microbiome directly affected the chances of developing metabolic syndrome according to a study out of John Hopkins University. Metabolic syndrome is characterized by a large waist, increased blood sugar, and often increased blood pressure. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), a protein that receives chemical signals to activate inflammation is now linked to the start and development of metabolic syndrome. In the research, TLR4 was affected by changes in the gut micro biome. Check out the study!
  • New research shows that low calorie diets or crash diets after a heart event may actually worsen symptoms and inhibit recovery. This seems counter intuitive because. One week into a fasting study participants saw that total body fat, visceral fat and liver fat had all significantly fallen by an average of 6%, 11%, and 42%, respectively. This was accompanied by significant improvements in insulin resistance, fasting total cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose and blood pressure. The problem was that heart fat content had risen by 44% and patients showed a deterioration in heart function. Low calorie diets or fasting periods are still good when used intermittently in healthy patients, but heart patients may need to avoid them. Check out the study!
  • Boston University School of Medicine has a new study showing that couples that who drink sodas may have a harder time getting pregnant. Females who consumed at least one soda per day had 25 percent lower chance of getting pregnant; male consumption was associated with 33 percent lower chance of getting their significant other pregnant. Check out the study!

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM) THAT MUSIC MEANS ITS TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

There is more evidence that the diet we eat can help or hinder disease from spreading. Researchers out of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, found a link between the spread of a particular type of breast cancer and increased levels of the amino acid, asparagine. Asparagine is found in dairy, whey, beef, chicken, eggs, seafood, asparagus, potatoes, beans, seeds, soy, and even nuts. Since the variety of foods is so vast, it’s hard to say go vegan or vegetarian. This research was done on mice, but if the same holds true for humans, special diets that limit or eliminate asparagine may become part of the cancer treatment regimen.
