How much water do you drink per day? I bet it’s not enough. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. There’s a formula for how much water you need to drink. It goes like this. Take the number of pounds you weight and cut that number in half. So if you weigh 200 lbs you need 100 ounces of water per day. Most of us barely get half that amount. Not only is proper hydration good for your skin and your brain function, drinking more water could help you lose weight. Some research shows that drinking 64 ounces or water in the morning can increase your metabolism by 24-30%. Don’t let hydration be an afterthought, instead drink at least 12 ounces of water in the first hour you are awake and continue drinking so that you hit that target number, half your body weight by dinner. Anything after should be considered a bonus. Remember, coffee and tea don’t count because the caffeine content has a dehydrating effect. How many grams of sugar do you drink on any given day? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. We often talk about how many calories we should eat on any given day or the grams of sugar we should eat, but rarely do we focus on what we tend to drink. Drinks are not immune from the daily count and maybe the hidden reason you’re gaining weight. A can of typical soda can have 150 calories or more and nearly 40 grams of sugar. As a reminder, 40 grams is over the recommended daily dose of sugar for the total of what you eat or drink in a given day. A small glass of juice with breakfast may do the same with roughly 130 calories and 23 grams of sugar. The best way to make sure you’re not drinking your figure away is to opt for water. If you don’t like plain water, add a slice of fruit or slices of cucumber to it. There’s actually been research that regular soda drinkers that cut it out of their routine will weigh 7-10 pounds less at the end of the year. And that’s without changing anything else. Garlic breath can ruin a good lunch meeting or a romantic dinner. But a few tips may help you freshen up quickly. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Garlic and onions contain sulfuric compounds that can lead to seriously bad breath. If you find yourself needing to cleanse quickly, here’s a few things that really work. First, a glass of milk helps, but it needs to be whole or 2% because the fat content of milk is what helps break down the compounds left behind by the garlic. Second, drink lemon water. It’s real common to ask for lemon with your water at a restaurant, so squeeze a few in your glass at the end of your meal, swoosh and swallow. If you’re a green tea drinker, have a cup of well steeped green tea. The catechins in green tea have been shown to freshen breath better than mints or gum. Now, once you get home be sure to brush and floss. If you have a tongue scraper use that too. This will keep the garlic smell from coming back the next day. Is your desk job making you sick? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Diabetes is on the rise across the country. As a matter of fact, the number of diabetics is a direct reflection of a societal shift that has happened over the last few decades. More and more people have desk jobs, often leaving them sitting for 2-4 hours at a time. Sedentary lifestyle is not just an indicator for diabetes, it can also lead to heart disease and cancer. So – here’s a few tips on how you can get more active Monday through Friday. First, take as many steps as you can. Start by parking away from the door and then when possible opting for the stairs instead of the elevator. Next, change some things about your work space, like buy a desk that allows you to alternate standing and sitting or trade your chair in for a large bounce ball. And get up and get some fresh air at lunch. Even if you brought your lunch, make a habit of walking around outside for at least 15-20 minutes. The exercise and fresh air at lunch will help energize you for round two. How you handle bad news may affect your overall health. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. While we like things to always be positive in our lives, it’s not possible to avoid bad news forever. Everyone gets it at one point or another. How we process that news is a direct reflection of how it will affect our overall health. First, be sure to work through the emotions. It’s ok to feel sad, afraid or even mad about bad news. Don’t hold it in – express your feelings. Then, don’t avoid the problem. Hearing it and talking about it will help the body cope. Once the reality has set in, wrap your brain around it and look for something good or visualize yourself on the other side of the issue. Remember, morning is a process. Whether it’s a loss of a job, a death in the family, or a personal trial, this too shall pass. Allow yourself to process, but don’t get stuck in phase one or two of the process, let your mind and body work through it and heal. As we age our eye health can decline. Did you know that certain foods can protect your eyes? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Something happens after age 40. If you’re there, you feel my pain. Most of us either need readers or glasses for driving. But, did you know that certain foods can reduce your risk for aging eyes by as much as 25%? Start with adding Fish to your diet. Cold water fish is best because it’s the highest in Omega 3s. Nuts are great too because they protect the aging eye with their high Vitamin E content. Lemons and grapefruits are also idea because they contain high levels of Vitamin C, an antioxidant. Lastly, don’t forget to increase your intake of leafy green vegies, like kale. These contain lutein, which is known to protect eyes. This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.
