After looking at millions of procedures over several years, researchers show that January is the best time to have anything done, because it produces the least amount of complications. It also shows that August is the WORST time to have anything done, because it produces the most complications. Who knows why these facts are true, but trust us they are!

Show Topic: Coronary Artery Disease

Co-Hosts:  Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guest: None

Segment 1:

We want you to have good heart health so, today’s show is all about coronary artery disease

  • Definition of Coronary Artery Disease (often called Heart Disease): Arteries should be elastic and smooth. Overtime they can become rigid and stiff. This keeps oxygen from reaching parts of the heart
  • What is Plaque? fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances that can stick to the lining of the arteries
  • What happens when Plaque ruptures? Heart attack and even sudden death
  • Difference between a heart attack and a stroke. Heart attack affects the heart and stroke affects the brain.
  • Why an aspirin helps to prevent both a stroke and a heart attack

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM)

THAT MUSIC MEANS IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

This is so counter intuitive. With all the talk we do on the gut microbiome, new research out of Tufts that was published in the journal Experimental Biology shows that wiping out the gut microbiome completely may be exactly what heart failure patients need. Now, this study was done on mice, but it looks promising. The science behind using a broad spectrum antibiotic for 5 weeks to suppress the immune system lies in the fact that heart failure patients see an increase in T-cells that actually cause the heart to enlarge. By wiping out the body’s natural ability to heal through swelling and scar tissue, the heart is preserved. Shockingly, the mice who were treated made almost a complete recovery from heart failure. More research is needed, but this is certainly fascinating and may result in a complete re-think of how cardiologists treat heart failure.

Want to live longer?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  In today’s world it is convenient to stop at a drive through on your way to work or during the lunch hour, but you may want to rethink your meal.  Turns out, cutting back on salt intake may help you live longer.  Fast food chains and restaurants are notorious for putting extra salt in their food.  Our bodies really only need about 500mg of sodium per day.  That is half of the amount of sodium found in a can of chicken broth!  A study published in the American Heart Association Journal states that eating less than 1500mg of sodium per day can lower your chances of cardiovascular disease.  Pay attention to the labels on your food and watch your sodium intake.  Your health depends on it.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Learn why patients from around the globe trust Executive Medicine of Texas to their health. Visit EMTexas.com that’s EMTexas.com

Endo—what?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  It is estimated that around 1 in 10 women in the US suffer from endometriosis.  Endometriosis occurs when uterine lining grows outside of the uterus and into other parts of the body.  Symptoms of endometriosis include: excessive bleeding, pain during intercourse, painful periods, pain with bowel movements or urination, and infertility.  A definitive diagnosis can be made by laparoscopy.  If you suffer from this disease, try using a heating pad, over the counter pain relievers, light exercise, and a pelvic massage to help with the pain.  Studies have also shown that changing your diet can also help with symptom control.  Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of endometriosis.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Doc Shock
Some new research may have uncovered the link between PPIs that many people use for heartburn, like Nexium and Prilosec and health issues. Previously, there was a correlation, but not a proof of cause between PPIs and heart disease, kidney disease, and dementia. Now, Dr. John P. Cooke at Houston Methodist Research Institute, TX says it may be due to the molecular changes that take place
when acid is basically eliminated. Turns out that use of such drugs causes premature vascular aging.

Are your breasts asymmetrical?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  A 2015 study published in Libertas Academica found that women with asymmetrical breasts were more likely to develop breast cancer.  Before you begin to panic, a little asymmetry is normal.  Menopause, menstrual cycles, breastfeeding, and the use of birth control pills can cause breast asymmetry.   However, if your breasts vary in size of about 20%, you may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer.  A mammogram can determine the cause of asymmetry.  It is recommended that women ages 40-55 have a mammogram every year.  After 55, every 1-2 years is recommended.  It is important to talk to your doctor if you notice any changes in your breasts.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are you feeling a little “off”?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Have you been experiencing vision problems, numbness and tingling, coordination problems, muscle weakness, or lowered immunity?  These symptoms could be a sign of low Vitamin E.  If gone untreated, it can lead to permanent neurological damage.  Vitamin E is responsible for protecting your cells against free radicals.  A Vitamin E deficiency can be caused by either genetics or medical conditions such as: celiac disease, cystic fibrosis, and cholestatic liver disease.  It is also common in premature and newborn babies with a low birthweight.  Eating nuts, seeds, whole grains, vegetable oils, milk, and vegetables can help to increase your Vitamin E intake.  Contact your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of Vitamin E deficiency.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Show Topic: Making Healthy Choices While You Travel

Co-Hosts:  Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guest: in Studio John Ayo

Segment 1:

Today’s show is all about how to stay healthy while on the road. Many executives travel the country each week, but travel shouldn’t be an excuse to make poor choices. We have a special guest in the studio with us, John Ayo, author of the book Travel Balance. Before we get started, let’s start with our own travel requirements. What makes for healthy and happy travel?

  • Roundtable about the types of travel we do and we like to do
  • Bad travel habits
  • Things patients tell us – perhaps excuses they make when traveling

THAT MUSIC MEANS IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

Loma Linda University has just made many new friends as they published research that dark chocolate actually reduces stress and improves cognition, immunity, and mood. They key is to eat chocolate that has at least 70% cacao (pronounced ca-cow).  Cacao regulates cellular immune response, neural signaling, and sensory perception. For many years, doctors have known that dark chocolate improves mood and the flavonoids in dark chocolate seem to be good for overall health, but this is the first in a scientific study that outlines exactly why it is good and how it works. Keep in mind that milk chocolate will not have the same affect, it has to be dark, very dark chocolate, look for 70% or greater on the label.
