Did you know that being self-aware is the first step to better health? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. We’ve all heard the term self-awareness, but do you even know that that means? When you’re self-aware, you are aware of your own character, feelings, motives and desires.  This is important when it comes to health. Think of this this way, if you know you’re stubborn, set up a reward system to help you make better health choices and create better habits. If you tend to be in denial or you’re argumentative, you can prepare yourself to hear what your doctor says and ask constructive questions. And if you can understand your motives in life, you can apply those motives to health and wellness decisions. It really is about being real with yourself and not becoming delusional in this often delusional world we live in. You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics. Do you expect everything that is FDA approved to be safe? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Research out of Brigham and Women's Hospital found that for drugs approved by the FDA between the years of 2001 and 2010, almost 1 in 3 had a safety event after it went to market. The researchers looked at drugs that were taken off the market completely, a black box warning or FDA issuance of some sort of safety communication. They found that of 222 novel therapeutics the FDA approved during this time period, three were withdrawn, 61 received boxed warnings and 59 elicited safety communications. This is significant. Remember, when drugs are studied they are not studied in every person and every circumstance and they can only seek approval on data they were able to gather. So, try to avoid prescription medications by making healthy choices and staying well! Get started making healthier choices today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics. Your body will thank you, for visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM.

Did you know that sunscreen may actually inhibit your production of Vitamin D? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. People who suffer from auto-immune diseases like Lupus and Celiac disease are already at a disadvantage when it comes to keeping their vitamin D levels at adequate levels. New research from College of Osteopathic Medicine at Touro University California suggests that sunscreen use on patients as well as those with diabetes, contributes to nearly 1 million cases of vitamin D deficiency internationally. According to the research, sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher can reduce the body's vitamin D-3 production by 99 percent. But we all know we need sunscreen to prevent skin cancer, so their recommendation is to spending 5 to 30 minutes in midday sun twice each week, without sunscreen. Do you know the average age of onset of diabetes? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. We used to think of diabetes as an old person’s disease – something that grandma and grandpa used to worry about. New statistics show that after the age of just 45, your risk for developing diabetes increases dramatically. Not just that, we are seeing more and more children with type II diabetes, something that used to be unheard of. Diabetes is serious and can lead to disability and early death. Be sure to visit your doctor regularly to have you blood sugar screened. Also, incorporate 7 servings of vegetables into your diet each day. And as far as exercise, be sure to get some form of exercise everyday and even more intense versions 3 times a week to ward off obesity and metabolic syndrome. For more unique and useful health information on more than 100 different topics, visit STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM where you can also find my book, Aged to Perfection, How to Thrive to 100, Happy Healthy & Wise. Show Topic: Life and Health Advice for the Next Generation (and anyone who will listen)

Co-Hosts:  Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guest: John Allcock author of FORTY THINGS I WISH I’D TOLD MY KIDS: Mindful Messages About Success, Happiness, Leather, Pickles, and the Use and Misuse of Imagination

Segment 1:

Today’s show is all about life and health advice for the next generation. Later this hour we have John Allcock joining us. He is the author of FORTY THINGS I WISH I’D TOLD MY KIDS: Mindful Messages About Success, Happiness, Leather, Pickles, and the Use and Misuse of Imagination. Let’s get started with things we wish we knew about health and about life when we were 18.

  • What did our generation get right? Wrong?
  • What do we see is the biggest challenges in life and health for the next generation?

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM)

THAT MUSIC MEANS IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

New research out of UT Southwestern Medical Center and Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas shows that middle age exercise can actually protect the heart from aging, reduce damage, and protect the heart from heart failure. Here’s what they found: you need to start the exercise before age 65 when the heart has the most ability to repair itself. The exercise needs to be four to five times a week for at least 30 minutes. Warm up and cool down is in addition to that 30 minutes. In the study they looked at 50 participants and divided them into two different groups. After two years, those that had exercised showed 18% improvement in oxygen intake during exercise and greater than 25% improvement in the left ventricular muscle of the heart. My advice, don’t put off exercise, start today for a healthier heart tomorrow.

Allcock has seen first-hand how mindfulness can transform our lives. As the co-founder of Sea Change Preparatory - a school that incorporates mindfulness into it’s curriculum - he has witnessed how this essential practice has helped students achieve the unthinkable. Continuing to break records in swimming, students at Sea Change Prep have learned to use mindfulness to overcome fear, dismiss limiting beliefs about their abilities, and achieve the goals that they set for themselves.

FORTY THINGS I WISH I’D TOLD MY KIDS was written to help adults and children alike achieve peace, self-acceptance, and self-realization.

  • How to let go of the “I’ll be happy when…” fallacy
  • How to identify the false narratives that prevent us from achieving our goals
  • How to drop the mental habits that do not lead to genuine happiness

Anti-what?! This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  New research from the University of Colorado at Boulder showed that older blood vessels can be repaired in 6 to 8 weeks with antioxidants specifically targeting mitochondria. In the study, participants took MitoQ, a form of Coenzyme Q that has been modified to cling to the inside of the mitochondria in cells.  The study shows that it can take anywhere from 15 to 20 years of aging off, making the blood vessels appear and function like much younger vessels. The study was published in the American Heart Association Journal Hypertension and it once again shows that pharmaceutical-grade supplements could be key in preventing heart disease. Talk to your doctor about pharmaceutical-grade supplements today!  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.
