Show Topic: The Road Warrior’s Guide to Romance and Relationships
Co-Hosts: Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson
Guest: Steve Haberly (in studio)
Segment 1:
Many of our listeners are what we refer to as road warriors. The job may take you or your spouse from coast to coast or halfway around the globe. Being separated is a major concern for relationships and can have a huge impact on marriages and families. We’re going to talk about not only how to stay young when you’re on the road, but stay engaged and connected with the people you love. We have a guest in the studio with us, Steve Haberly, he has a blog at https://howsyourconnection.com where he gives excellent advice on this very subject.
MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM)
THAT MUSIC MEANS IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.
Listen up men, it may be you’re turn to take the pill. A new pill, referred to as DMAU, is being developed by National Institutes of Health, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The new daily pill works much like the female birth control pill by combining the hormone androgen and a progestin. While the participants in the study had lowered testosterone, but no symptoms, I am still concerned about lowering testosterone levels for other reasons, besides the sexual ones. Participants also had slight weight gain and lowered HDL “good” cholesterol.

Think you aren’t at risk for Alzheimer’s? Think again. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. The US medical journal Neuron recently published a study that may have linked the Herpes Virus to Alzheimer’s Disease. Before you think you are off the hook, it was linked to Herpes Viruses 6A and 7- not the sexually transmitted disease you may be familiar with. These viruses often work together and cause Roseola in infants and children. Both of the viruses are extremely common and were also found to cause inflammation in nerve cells on the brain. It is theorized that the inflammation caused by the virus can lead to Alzheimer’s. Although the study doesn’t actually prove that Herpes leads to Alzheimer’s Disease, it does provide a promising path for more research. Do you have low testosterone? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. A new study that came out of Durham University has suggested that environment may have an effect on testosterone. Men have a higher risk of low testosterone later in life if they grew up in areas with higher infectious disease and other harsh conditions. The study consisted of 359 men located across Europe. It included men who have moved from harsh to better conditions and vice versa. Before you begin thinking you are not at risk for low testosterone, think again. Many factors influence testosterone, including diet, exercise, genetics, and vitamin and mineral levels. It is important to get your testosterone checked yearly during your annual physical. Segment 1:
Today is the day. We are talking about sugar – something this country is addicted to! Later this hour we are joined by Warren Honeycutt, author of Get Lean for Life and a 6 time finalist for Mr. America.
Discuss Sugar – sugar content and labels
DOC SHOCK Okay, I was shocked by this one – not the results, just the facts of the study. The University of the Netherlands looked at the effects when a pregnant woman smokes marijuana. First of all, I didn’t know there were women out there stupid enough to do this, but it turns out that worldwide, 2-13% of pregnant women do. After MRI imaging of the brain of the babies after they were born, the ones who were exposed had thicker pre-frontal cortexes and later also developed mental heath issues. DUH!!!!!! Read more!

Do you know someone with Parkinson’s Disease? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. About one million people in the US suffer from Parkinson’s disease. It is caused by the death of neurons and nerve cells in the brain that are responsible for movement. When the cells die, it can lead to jerky movements, trouble walking, and difficulty performing day to day tasks. A new study out of University of Tübingen and the Helmholtz Association in Germany may have found a way to halt nerve cell death. The answer is Vitamin B-3. Vitamin B-3 can boost the mitochondria (also known as the powerhouse) in the nerve cells. Scientists still need to perform clinical trials on people, but the research looks promising. Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. Time to talk about sunburns. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. It’s that time of year again. Time to sit by the pool and enjoy the long summer days. But, you might want to make sure you have sun protection close by. Did you know that it takes less than fifteen minutes for the sun’s UV rays to burn your skin? The best way to avoid a nasty burn is to find shade, wear a hat, or to wear long clothing. Sunscreen is also a good option, especially while swimming. The CDC recommends wearing at least 15spf. Be sure to reapply as directed and wait the appropriate time before entering water. Also, check the expiration date on the bottle. If you have little ones, make sure they’re properly protected against the sun. Sunscreen should not be applied to infants under six months. Are you having trouble sleeping? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. Studies have shown time and time again that lack of sleep can lead to high blood pressure. But, it wasn’t until recently that scientists at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York found that disturbed sleep leads to high blood pressure. Meaning, you can sleep for seven to nine hours, but still be at risk because you are waking up throughout the night. The study focused on women because they are at a HIGHER risk than men. This is because women tend to be the primary caretakers of their children and aging parents. They also have fluctuations in their hormones that can make staying asleep more difficult. Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble sleeping. This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you have a sweet tooth? You may be one of the lucky ones who do. Research from the University of Copenhagen The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences shows that people with a sweet tooth often have a genetic variation that leads them to have less body fat. It goes against our natural intuition, but people with gene variation of FGF21, the sweet tooth gene, have a predisposition to less body fat than others. The bad news is that these people generally have a higher risk for high blood pressure, so eating healthy is even more important for them.

I have it, your best and worst summer treats list. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Summer is a great time for soup – chilled soup that is like gazpacho or cucumber-dill. Kale salads are not only refreshing, the nutrients will boost your energy. Berries and melons are also a great summer treat. While noodle salad may be your favorite picnic snack, it won’t love you back and hits our worst list, along with fried chicken, and that favorite frozen coffee drink that is covered with whip. Even the fruit juices should stay out of your grocery cart. They may contain vitamins, but the sugar trade off makes them a net negative. Instead use berries to infuse your water or have sparkling water with a slice of lime. You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM.
