Are you or your children obsessed with apps like Snapchat?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Body dysmorphic disorder affects nearly one in fifty people.  It’s considered a mental disorder on the obsessive-compulsive scale.  People who struggle with body dysmorphia focus heavily on little or nonexistent physical flaws.  This often leads to surgically altering their appearance.  According to new research, apps like Snapchat are actually making the condition worse.  Fifty-five percent of plastic surgeons in 2017 stated that their patients were either wanting to “better their selfies” or to look they do in filters on Snapchat.  This is type of behavior has coined the new term “Snapchat Dysmorphia”.  Talk to a doctor if you believe you or a loved one is struggling with body dysmorphia.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Learn why patients from around the globe trust Executive Medicine of Texas to their health. Visit EMTexas.com that’s EMTexas.com.

Time to talk Salmonella.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  No, I am not referring to the “fish”.  Salmonella is a bacteria found in raw and undercooked poultry, ground beef, and eggs.  When consumed, symptoms of salmonellosis usually begin within twelve to seventy-two hours.  Persons exposed may develop abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and fever.  These symptoms can last anywhere between four and seven days.  Children under five are at the highest risk.  The best way to prevent Salmonella infection is to cook meat and eggs thoroughly and to wash your hands and counter surfaces frequently while cooking.  Call your doctor if you are experiencing signs of salmonellosis and keep track of foods that are being recalled by the CDC for salmonella.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. If you are vegan or lactose intolerant, you may want to listen up.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Calcium is essential for maintaining overall health.  Foods that contain dairy tend to be full of calcium but are a no-go for vegans and those with a lactose intolerance.  Luckily, there are plenty of other healthy options that can help you reach your daily calcium goal of 1,000 milligrams.  You heard right, if you are nineteen to fifty years old it is recommended that you consume 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day.  Chia seeds, almonds, white beans, tofu, edamame, sweet potatoes, arugula, and okra are full of calcium and are also extremely healthy.  Be sure to talk to your doctor if you believe you are not consuming enough calcium.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you think men are the only ones that need to worry about testosterone?  Think again.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Women secrete testosterone through the adrenal glands and ovaries.  Unlike men, who need high amounts of testosterone, women only need about 6 percent of what men need.  But, having too little can cause a lot of issues, such as: weight gain, muscle weakness, vaginal dryness, fatigue, reduced sex drive, and fertility issues.  Unfortunately, these are all common symptoms of other health problems.  Testosterone can also decrease as menopause approaches.  It is important to have your hormones checked yearly at your annual physical exam and to talk to your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of low testosterone.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. It’s time to put your cell phone down!  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  A new study from The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute has found a link between cell phone use and memory development issues.  This is believed to be caused by the electromagnetic fields that cellular devices pro-ject.  The study consisted of 700 swiss adolescents and focused on the effects of the fields when a cell phone is being held up to the ear.  The part of the brain that controls the development of figural memory is located on the right side of the brain.  The researchers found that this area was affected when people held their phone to the right side of their head to talk.  It may be time to bust out the old headphones and Bluetooth ear pieces.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Okay, I’ve said it before and I will say it again—your gut microbiome affects everything!  A recent study out of University of Virginia School of Medicine suggests that a mother’s microbiome is key to the neurological development of their baby.  They have linked an UNHEALTHY gut microbiome to autism and other neurological disorders.  Crazy right?  Well, not really.  Your microbiome affects your immune system, which in turn affects the development of your unborn offspring’s immune system.  It is suggested that expectant mothers take probiotics to prevent an unhealthy microbiome.  A healthy mom equals a healthy baby.

Is your company killing productivity at lunch? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Many companies bring in lunch for their employees either on a regular basis or as a treat. The options they choose could mean the difference between a productive day or a total loss. Choosing foods that are fresh and contain few carbohydrates is best. Meats are good as other sources of protein,, but when it comes to desert, skip the cakes and sweet treats. Instead opt for things like fresh fruit or sorbet. Heavy meals make you tired and slow down cognition while your body sends everything it has to help aid in digestion. The lunch options you chose could affect important decisions, costing you time and money in the future. Think of your employees as the gears in your company and the food they eat as the oil that keeps them moving. Remember, everyone wants a well-oiled machine so choose food wisely. Have you heard everyone talking about eating organic or non-GMO? You’re probably wondering, hey, what’s the big deal. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Organically grown foods and non-GMO foods are healthier and easier on your body at a cellular level. Genetically Modified Foods or GMO foods come from what we call “Round-up” crops. That’s because they have been genetically modified to survive being sprayed with the same chemical that is used in the product Round-up, the one you use to kill weeds in your yard. The farmers wanted a way to kill the weeds, but not the produce. But guess what? We haven’t been genetically modified to consume these chemically sprayed foods. So, it’s best to avoid them. Read labels, look for non-GMO – your body will thank you. Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics. Your body will thank you, for visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM.
