Need a sweet treat to help you stay hydrated? This is Judy Gaman and this is your stay young medical minute. Soft drinks can pack the pounds on and sugar free versions are filled with harmful artificial sweeteners. Tea, even green tea is filled with caffeine which can act like a diuretic, leaving you more dehydrated on a hot day. Water is always best, but some people just can’t get into drinking enough water to stay fully hydrated. It’s summer time, so you have a great option. One that is naturally sweetened and proven to hydrate and provide vitamins. It’s watermelon. This fruit is packed with water and at just 44 calories a cup, it’s the perfect snack. If you’re the type that likes to pick it up already sliced, be sure to look for the “cut in our store” sticker. This ensures that it’s fresh and not pre-washed before shipping. Looking for some natural sources of dietary iron? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Symptoms of low iron include fatigue, headaches, dizziness or dry damaged hair or skin. Iron supplements can upset your stomach, making it hard to be compliant with doctor’s advice. Getting a healthy dose of iron in your diet can help raise iron levels naturally. If you’re a fan of seafood, shrimp cocktail is low in calories and 3 ½ ounces can provide 14% of your daily iron recommendation. That same amount of spinach can provide 20%. And for you chocolate lovers, one ounce of dark chocolate can provide 19%. So, if you really want to drive home the iron, have a spinach and shrimp salad with an ounce of dark chocolate for dessert. This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a global leader in preventative medicine. Summer time brings out the best and the worst food options. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Summer food may taste good, but you need to know which ones to place on your plate and which one’s to avoid. If you’re a fan of potato or macaroni salad, opt instead for cole slaw. You’ll save yourself a number of calories and the inevitable post meal crash. Grilling out? Although those ribs may be tasty, they’re full of fat and slathered with sugary sauce. Pick chicken or steak kabobs instead, not only will you get lean protein, but if you add bell peppers to your Kabob, you’ll also get nice dose of vitamin C. Now when it comes to desert, skip the ice cream sandwiches and popsicles. Instead, freeze some grapes or blueberries in small baggies for an on the go frozen snack, or enjoy a serving of fresh fruit salad. This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.
