Do you look down at your feet in disgust and horror? What is that?!? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Toenail fungus is extremely common and is a fungal infection of the toenail. This is something that is easy to fix with prescription medication. But if you aren’t big on meds, lets talk home remedies. According to a 2011 study, applying a small amount of Vicks VapoRub to the infected area once a day may help with symptoms. Have you ever heard of snakeroot? It’s a plant in the sunflower family. A 2008 study showed that its extract can be just as effective as certain prescription medications in fighting off toenail fungal infections. Even dietary changes can help ease symptoms. Talk to your doctor if you have persistent toenail fungal problems. Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. What do marijuana use and schizophrenia have in common? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Although still illegal in most states, marijuana is gaining popularity due to its health benefits. Past studies have shown that marijuana use can increase the risk of psychosis. The risk of this has always been relatively low. However, a new study out of Tel Aviv University in Israel shows that those with a family history of psychotic disorders are more likely to develop them with marijuana use. The study used mice as their test subjects. One of the groups included mice that were susceptible to schizophrenia. These mice, after being exposed to THC, were more likely to develop the disorder than those at normal risk. Always be honest and talk to your doctor if you use marijuana. Maybe it’s time to download some yoga music. A new study published by the European Society of Cardiology shows that listening to yoga music at night may be good for your heart. Listening to this type of music soothes the heart, actually changing its rhythm, switching from the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. This takes the body from flight or fight to rest, digest, and recover. Yoga music is also good for reducing stress and anxiety and promoting overall health.

The US is seeing a spike in a viral infection that is easily preventable. What am I talking about? Measles. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. According to the CDC, a measles infection is so contagious that nearly ninety percent of unvaccinated people that come into contact with a person who has it will get infected. The infection spreads through respiratory droplets in the air. Measles, also known as rubeola, causes cough, high fever, runny nose, red skin rash, and red eyes. The MMR vaccine is not given until an infant is twelve months old. Most infants don’t have a strong enough immune system to fight off measles, which is why it is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable infant deaths. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about measles. This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. You keep telling yourself it’s just another headache, but the pain is becoming more intense and unbearable. Let’s talk migraines. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Migraine sufferers usually get their first attack during childhood, early adolescence, or young adulthood. Unlike a common headache, a migraine is usually a throbbing or pulsating pain located one side of the head. Sufferers often experience sensitivity to light and sound, vision changes, nausea and vomiting. A migraine can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days and the symptoms can become so intense that over the counter medications don’t help. Once the migraine subsides, suffers usually feel fatigued and weak for about twenty-four hours. Talk to your doctor if you believe you struggle with migraine headaches. Did you know that nearly one million people in the US are hospitalized a year because of pneumonia? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Most people view pneumonia as something only “old” people get. This isn’t true. Although age is a risk factor, it is not the end all be all. Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs and is the worldwide leading cause of death in children under age five. When symptoms begin, they often resemble the flu such as: chills, fever, cough, and weakness. But as the infection goes untreated, symptoms can worsen and patients can also develop chest pain. Most children under five have trouble voicing their symptoms. Call your doctor if you think you or child has pneumonia. If you are 65 or older talk to your doctor about the pneumonia vaccine.
