Time for another mental health check.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Depression and anxiety have both been linked to low serotonin levels.  But what is serotonin?  It’s a chemical, often referred to as the “happy” chemical because it influence’s mood.  Serotonin is also a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in the central nervous system.  Low levels of this chemical can lead to mood changes, poor memory, anxiety, insomnia, and even sweet or starchy food cravings.  Changing diet and exercise habits along with psychotherapy can help increase levels.  However, sometimes, this is not enough and medication may be needed.  This is why it is important to talk to your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of depression.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Learn why patients from around the globe trust Executive Medicine of Texas to their health. Visit EMTexas.com that’s EMTexas.com.

Did you conceive through Invitro Fertilization, or commonly known as IVF?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  IVF has been a great scientific advancement that has helped countless couples conceive who otherwise couldn’t.  With IVF becoming more accessible and prevalent, new studies involving children conceived through IVF have been completed.  In one study, teens conceived through assisted pregnancies were shown to have higher blood pressure than those who were conceived naturally.  Although the blood pressure was not scary high, it was still cause for concern.  High blood pressure can lead to a stroke or heart attack.  It is important to have your child’s blood pressure taken when they go to the doctor. Do you struggle with acne?  I may have some good news for you.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Acne is caused by the backup of dead skin cells and oil in hair follicles.  This leads to pain and inflammation in the follicle itself.  Around forty to fifty five percent of adults aged twenty to forty experience adult acne.  It can lead to skin infections, scarring, and low self-esteem.  A study was recently published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology stating that researchers are working on a vaccine to prevent acne.  So, how does it work?  Well, it works by attacking the toxin secreted by acne vulgaris.  This reduces the inflammation to the hair follicle.   Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing persistent acne.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Learn why patients from around the globe trust Executive Medicine of Texas to their health. Visit EMTexas.com that’s EMTexas.com.

You’re looking for something fun to do with your friends and think, why not go to a hookah bar?  Well, you may want to think again.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Hookahs have been used for centuries, but little has been known about the health risks that come along with using one.  Participants are still being exposed to tobacco and the CDC warns that the exposure could be longer than that of smoking cigarettes.  Hookah smoking can also lead to rapid skin aging, increased risk of cancer, increased risk of infectious disease, increased risk of heart conditions, and lung problems.  It’s time to put the hookah away and start taking care of your health and the health of others.  Second hand smoke, even from a hookah, kills.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Let’s talk about the H-word.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  We’ve all had them at one point or another.  It is estimated that over 10 million people suffer from them a year.  What am I talking about?  Hemorrhoids.  Hemorrhoids are swollen veins located in or around the rectum.  Although most of the time small, they can cause a lot of pain and irritation. Lifestyle and diet changes can be an easy way to alleviate symptoms.  It is well known that eating fiber can reduce the risk and size of hemorrhoids.  But did you know it only works if you are drinking enough water?  Not drinking enough will lead to constipation which worsens symptoms.  It is also important to exercise to keep things flowing.  Taking regular warm showers and sitz baths can also help relieve symptoms.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Learn why patients from around the globe trust Executive Medicine of Texas to their health. Visit EMTexas.com that’s EMTexas.com.

Do you keep your house nice and cool year-round?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  A new study out of the University College of London has linked the temperature of your home to high blood pressure.  Nearly one hundred million people in the US struggle with high blood pressure.  This can lead to other complications such as a stroke or heart attack.  The study consisted of nearly five thousand participants sixteen years of age or older.  They filled out a lifestyle questionnaire and nurses visited their homes to measure the indoor temperature and the participant’s blood pressure.  Those with a cooler home had higher blood pressure reading than those with a warmer home.  Talk to your doctor today if you are experiencing symptoms of high blood pressure.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Your marriage could literally be affecting your health.  A new study out of Ohio Statue University found that partners who have “nasty” fights are at a higher risk for developing a leaky gut.  They aren’t referring to the now and then arguments.  But nasty, they mean fights or arguments that cause daily distress.  A leaky gut is something that you really don’t want.  Bacteria is leaked into blood stream, leading to inflammation and a decreased immune system.  If you are in a toxic marriage seek counselling and help.  Your health depends on it!

All this evidence and still smoking? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Over the years we have all been told about the health dangers of smoking, most commonly lung cancer and premature aging. As if you really need another reason to put down the packs, new research out of the FDA actually shows that smoking affects nearly every organ in the body. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States. Even if you have smoked for an extended amount of time, its never too late to quit. Finally, it looks as though the FDA is going to regulate nicotine levels in cigarettes to help make it easier to break the habit. Stop smoking today and encourage others to quit and remember, second hand smoke is dangerous too. Your body is a temple for your soul and you need to protect it.
