Do you have an aquarium in your house? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Having an aquarium can improve your life. Who knew those cute little fish could have such health benefits. I remember being a child and it seemed that most houses had an aquarium, including mine. I always loved to stare at the fish and the little treasure chest at the bottom that would open and close with the bubbles. Well it turns out that that mindless staring probably had great benefits. Research shows that watching fish lowers stress and anxiety, almost like a form of hypnosis. People who own aquariums have lower blood pressure and tend to sleep better. Another study also showed that Alzheimer’s patients who had aquariums ate more and were less combative. Perhaps we should get back to having aquariums in our homes, offices, and even the hospital. If you like tips like this, visit Stay Young America dot com where you can get more useful health information and pick up a copy of my book Stay Young: 10 Proven Steps to Ultimate Health. Want to sit back with some popcorn and a good movie? Well, it may be just what the doctor ordered. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Isn’t it great when we find health benefits in an old favorite pastime? That’s right I am giving you permission to watch and snack. However – there are a few caveats – first the popcorn must be air popped and no added salt or butter. Think of popcorn as a whole grain – one that actually tastes good. Popcorn contains powerful antioxidants that fight off free radicals within the body. Not to mention – it’s full of fiber. And – about that movie – well make it a comedy. Watching funny movies and laughing will exercise your face and abs. It will also release endorphins – the feel good hormones in your body. Even if you’re in a bad mood or down in the dumps, a good comedy can help turn things around. Oh – one last thing – no more than two movie nights a week - because remember – active exercise still trumps sitting! When’s the last time you gave or received a hug? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Don’t shy away from physical affection. Some people believe that our society is grumpy because over the years we have adopted a hands off approach. Could there be something to all those pats on the back? Well researchers say yes. Physical affection actually reduces stress hormones and releases oxytocin, a hormone that makes you feel happy. People need to touch and be touched. Studies show that marriages where couples show physical affection, like handle holding and snuggling have a higher success rate not to mention the people tend to live longer. Next time you see a friend or a relative, reach out and give ‘em a big hug. While you’re at it – tell them you love ‘em too. When’s the last time you played? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Most people think that playing is for kids, but the reality is that adults need time to play too. What is play you ask? Well, it’s living in the moment and doing something not for competition or because you have to. Often play is spontaneous, like breaking out in a pillow fight. I’m sure it’s been too long since you played. But you need to know that people who take time to relax and live in the moment not only live longer they also have more satisfying relationships with their spouse, children, and event their own parents. Take time out for a hobby or just get out and throw the ball around. Whatever it is – have fun doing it. And if weather permits – play outside and soak up the fresh air too. If someone told you to watch your salt intake, do you even know what that means? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Salt, which is listed as sodium on nutritional labels is not your friend. Not only does too much salt cause you to swell and bloat, it can also raise your blood pressure. Too much salt is also is bad for your bones. When you eat too much salt the body decreases the amount of calcium it can absorb. It also causes you to excrete calcium through your urine, basically depleting your bones of what they need to stay strong and stay healthy. How much is too much you ask? It’s best to keep your daily sodium intake between 1500-2300 mg per day. Unfortunately, the average American consumes twice that amount. So – don’t be the average American.
