DOC SHOCK

A new study has linked marijuana use and schizophrenia.  Although still illegal in most states, marijuana is gaining popularity due to its health benefits.  Past studies have shown that marijuana use can increase the risk of psychosis. The risk of this has always been relatively low.  However, the study out of Tel Aviv University in Israel shows that those with a family history of psychotic disorders are more likely to develop them with marijuana use.  The study used mice as their test subjects.  One of the groups included mice that were susceptible to schizophrenia.  These mice, after being exposed to THC, were more likely to develop the disorder than those at normal risk.  Always be honest and talk to your doctor if you use marijuana.

It’s almost flu season, time to get that flu vaccine!  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Staying Young Medical Minute.  The flu virus is highly contagious and can turn deadly fast.  You may be thinking that the flu vaccine can cause the actual flu—this isn’t true.  In fact, it takes the vaccine about two weeks before becoming effective and it doesn’t contain a live virus, making an infection from it impossible.  Chances are, you were already exposed by the time you received the vaccine.  Most of the population waits until an epidemic before getting vaccinated.  Although the flu vaccine does not guarantee complete immunity, it does decrease your chances of getting the flu by forty to sixty percent.  I don’t know about you, but I like those odds!  Talk to your doctor about the flu vaccine today!  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Today we Have 10 Steps to a Healthier and Happier Home. We’ll handle the healthier and we have a special guest, Dr. Fran Walfish, America’s Favorite Psychologist who will be joining us for the Happier.

Explain how the 2 go hand in hand – healthier means happier. Give examples of patients that get their health together and then their life falls into place.

1. have your hormones check and keep them balanced

2. know all your numbers and always strive for better

3. Exercise

4. Take “screen breaks” as a family

5. Change your diet

6. Give up trying to control other people, especially your spouse/partner.

7. View people as good until they demonstrate otherwise. Most people are good.  Those who are not will reveal themselves in time and you can weed out the ones who are not worthy of your friendship.

8. Give yourself Special Time. Take 10-15 minutes each day to be with yourself and chill. You'd be surprised how challenging this is when you have a spouse and children tugging at you 24/7. Give yourself short, undivided, positive attention each day for nourish and fortify you. Let differences work for them. All couples are made with two different people. No two people in the world are just alike. And, after working with hundreds of couples, I’m convinced opposites often do attract. But, great couples learn to build upon those differences. They build upon each other’s strengths and let each other minimize their weaknesses. “Two are better than one” — the author of Ecclesiastes says — and great couples live this truth. Extend grace for the minor annoyances. Can we just be honest? People do stuff that gets on our nerves at times. That’s true of all of us — even with the people —maybe even especially with the people we love the most. Great couples have learned not to let those little things distract from the major things — like love and commitment. Serve each other. There are no 50-50 splits of responsibility in a great marriage. Great couples learn to sacrificially serve one another. In the best relationships, it would be difficult to judge who serves one another more. There may be be times one gives 100%, because the other can’t give anything. And there are other times the other spouse gives 100%. And neither complains when it’s their turn to give all. Prioritize their time. Great couples spend time together. Life is busy for all of us. These couples schedule time together. They find things to do that each of them enjoy. And, they say no to other things that would keep them from having adequate time together. Keep no secrets. There are no hidden issues among great couples. They are vulnerable with each other. Both partners open themselves up to the other person completely. Publicly support each other. Great couples are supportive of each other in public. They don’t tear each other down in public. They handle private issues in private. Keep no record of wrongs. Great couples learn to forgive. There aren’t any lingering issues that haven’t been resolved.

9. Be kind and nice to your child(ren).

10. Never engage in negotiations, bargaining, or deal-making

Have you ever heard of something called balsamic vinegar?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Staying Young Medical Minute.  Balsamic vinegar is a common ingredient in marinades and salad dressings.  Not only does it taste great, but it also has a ton of health benefits.  Balsamic vinegar contains acetic acid and antioxidants that can help clear up your skin when ingested over time.  Do not put it on your skin—it will stain.  This magic vinegar can also lower blood sugar when it is added to your meal.  Weight loss and digestive health are also some benefits.  Balsamic vinegar contains helpful probiotics that aid in digestion and overall gut health.  Although it has a ton of health benefits, talk to your doctor if you experience an upset stomach or throat inflammation, these could be symptoms of an allergic reaction.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Let’s talk vitamin-d.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Staying Young Medical Minute.  Vitamin-d is essential for bone growth and health.  When deficient, bones can become fragile and brittle.  Did you know that it affects breast health too?  Well, a new study out of Brazil suggests there is a link between having low vitamin-d and developing breast cancer.  In the study, women with lower levels of vitamin-d after going through menopause were at a higher risk of developing breast cancer than those with normal levels.  The National Cancer Institute has estimated that over twelve percent of women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at least once in their lifetime.  It’s time to start paying attention to your vitamin-d. Make sure that your levels are checked yearly and don’t forget about that mammogram!  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. How many times have you heard the saying “I’ll sleep when I’m dead”? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Staying Young Medical Minute.  This type of thinking isn’t uncommon in today’s world.  Our high paced society full of work deadlines and family stress can lead to a lack of sleep.  It’s a well-known fact that the average adult needs between seven and nine hours of sleep a night.  But, did you know that having a normal sleep schedule is necessary for your overall health?  By a normal sleep schedule, I’m referring to going to bed and waking up at the same time—even on the weekends.  New research from Duke University Medical Center suggests that having a sleep schedule can aid in heart and metabolism health. Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble sleeping.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. DOC SHOCK

Alzheimer’s Disease affects nearly six million people in the US.  This number is predicted to grow in the upcoming years, almost tripling by the year 2050.  The worst part is that we still really don’t know how to fix it or the exact cause.  A new study out of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health was published in the journal SLEEP.  They found that excessive sleepiness and napping during the day leads to a buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain--a build up leads to Alzheimer’s.  If the sleepiness is caused by disturbed sleep, then people may be able to be treated before too much plaque is built up.

Time to put that cigarette down!  The time to quit is now.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  It is well known that smoking causes cancer, heart disease, COPD, and ton of other health problems.  You know all of this, so why are you still doing it?  It’s because of the nicotine.  Nicotine is found in tobacco products and can be extremely addicting.  Even hookah and vaping have nicotine and can lead to lung cancer and other problems.  Neither are regulated by the FDA.  Studies have shown that even if it says nicotine free, it can still contain it--because it’s not regulated.  The hardest part about quitting, is the nicotine withdrawals.  Secondhand, even thirdhand smoking kills!  Talk to your doctor if you need help.  Your loved ones will thank you.  Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Let’s talk PTSD.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Most people think that PTSD is something that only veterans go through.  This is not true.  PTSD can arise after any traumatic event.  This could include assault, a car accident, or even a natural disaster.  It is estimated that around eight percent of Americans will suffer from PTSD in their lifetime.  Did you that there is another type of PTSD?  A study from 2014 reported that people can suffer from complex PTSD.  This happens when a person is involved in long-term trauma, not a one-time event.  Symptoms of PTSD can include flashbacks or nightmares, avoiding situations that cause trauma memories, a loss of trust in others, being startled by loud noises, and hyperarousal.  Talk to your doctor if you have symptoms of PTSD.  Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.
