This is Judy Gaman, author of the award winning book Age to Perfection: How to Thrive to 100, Happy, Healthy, and Wise and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Each day I bring you one new tip that will help you stay young and vibrant. It's the worst when something you really wanted to eat falls on the floor. But if you grab it in five seconds, it's ok, right? The five-second-rule isn't a real thing. Bacteria can contaminate a food within milliseconds. Mythbusting tests show that moist foods attract more bacteria than dry foods, but there's no "safe duration." Instead, safety depends on how clean the surface you dropped the food on is. Whether you eat it or not after that is up to you, but if the people that walk on that floor are also walking around New York City, for example, we wouldn't recommend it. We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. Each day I bring you one new tip that will help you stay young and vibrant. Can sugar and chocolate really give you acne? Well, for one month, scientists fed dozens of people candy bars containing 10 times the usual amount of chocolate, and dozens of others fake chocolate bars. When they counted the zits before and after each diet, there was "no difference" between the two groups. Neither the chocolate nor the fat seemed to have any effect on acne. DOC SHOC
Do you breast feed or formula feed? The argument over which is best has been going on for years. Obviously, if a mother is able and willing, breastfeeding is the best option. However, in some cases, formula is needed. Soy based formulas are used to help sooth colicky babies. However. scientists at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) found that soy formula use was linked to severe menstrual pain in early adulthood. Women who drank soy-based formulas as an infant were 50% more likely to have severe menstrual pain than those who didn’t. It has also been linked to a higher risk of developing endometriosis. Because of this, scientists are cautioning parents to only use soy formula if necessary. Learn More!

Today’s tip is all about learning to listen to your body. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. We tend to get so busy these days that we forget to slow down and hear what our body is saying. Did you know that most people tend to eat when they’re really just thirsty. This causes a flood of unnecessary calories. Another common thing people ignore is when the body tells you it’s tired. That’s not the time to get on social media or glue yourself to the tube. Nope – this is when you sleep. Ignoring your body and the things it’s trying to tell you will only lead to bigger issues later on. If you’re too busy to listen to your body, I guess you have time for a major illness, because ignoring symptoms never pays off. Listen to your body and improve your chances for a longer and healthier life. Tips like this and full episodes of the Staying Young Show can be found at StayYoungAmerica.com that’s StayYoungAmerica.com

When’s the last time you had a date. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Today’s tip is all about the incredible benefits of dates. I’m not talking about the Friday night kind of date. No – let’s talk about that small, sweet fruit that often gets overlooked. Packed with nutrients, dates contain oil, calcium, sulfur, iron, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, copper and magnesium. Some experts say that a date at breakfast will keep constipation at bay and help prevent colon cancer. Because they’re naturally sweet, dates are a great pick-me-up in the afternoon, giving you a much needed energy boost for the end of the work day. And if you suffer from seasonal allergies, the trace minerals in Dates may give you some relief. Want a little pecan pie? Stuff a date with a pecan for a tasty treat. Minty breath is more than just sexy, it’s healthy. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Did you know there is nutritional value in mint? Mint comes in over 30 different varieties and 70% of the world’s peppermint and spearmint is grown right here in the United States. It’s often found in gum and mints because it aids in digestion. THAT MUSIC MEANS IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.
I’ve said it time and time again: sleep is important! A new study out of Pennsylvania State University found a link between sleep deprivation and dehydration. That’s right, not sleeping enough can make you dehydrated. The researchers found that people who slept less than 6 hours a night were 16-59% more likely to be dehydrated than those that slept a full 8 hours. Why, you ask? Vasopressin. Vasopressin is an antidiuretic hormone that controls water balance throughout the body. Scientists believe that lack of sleep leads to a malfunction of the release of this hormone. So, rest up! Your body depends on it! Remember to sleep at least 7.5-9 hours a night.
