Did you know that being married has health benefits? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Are you married? If no, maybe you should be. Turns out people who are happily married tend to live longer and healthier lives. The key here is “happily married” so try your best to be a good spouse – your health depends on it. Researchers found that happily married people have less stress, meaning less inflammation in the body and less disease. These people tend to also sleep more regular hours and eat home cook meals more often. So if you’ve been living it up as a bachelor – its time to settle down. Not only will you live longer and healthier, some studies suggest that you will also be less prone to depression and anxiety. So stop wasting time and go find your soul mate – your life depends on it.

When you were a kid, did you jump rope? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. That age old childhood game is great exercise for both kids and adults. Besides, no other exercise prop is as easy to carry with you on trips and to the office. Not only is jumping rope a great cardiac workout, it also strengthens muscles in the arms, legs, and core, giving you a whole body work out in a short time. 8-10 minutes of jumping rope can erase the sins of a regular size candy bar – so go ahead and cheat on your diet, as long as you’re prepared to jump it off. Don’t forget, jumping rope is also good for coordination and brain health because you have to concentrate on jumping at just the right time. If you think you’re out of practice – well that’s ok. Jumping rope is like riding a bike, once you learn it, you never really forget it.

What if a simple seed could hold the fountain of youth? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Today’s tip is all about an ancient seed that can hold promise in preventing heart disease, cancer, and even diabetes. I’m talking about Flax Seed. Believe it or not, in 600 BC a king once ordered all his subjects to consume flax seed every day in order to stay healthy. I wonder what that king would say now if he could see all the new foods that have been fortified with flax seed. Have you seen the eggs that say fortified with Omega 3? The farmers have actually fed the chickens a diet rich in flax seed. The best thing about adding flax seed to your diet is that it’s easy to do, just sprinkle it over your yogurt or in your cereal each morning and start your day off right.

Have you ever had a facial? If not, perhaps it’s time to treat yourself to one. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Nothing feels better than a professional facial. Not only does it leave you with a clean glow about you, the health benefits of a facial go beyond just the pretty face. During a professional facial the face is massaged allowing the body to flush out stagnant toxins, reducing the redness and puffiness that shows on a tired face. The power of touch can do magnificent things for the mind, body, and spirit. Spending time in the facial chair and being pampered can help your body release “feel good” hormones that will boost your mood and improve relationships. Also, a facial improves circulation allowing important nutrients to reach the skin. So ladies, next time you’re man says your grumpy – tell him you know just the cure.

How long do you go between meals? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Many people eat a late dinner and are then up early for breakfast, giving their digestive system little to no down time. For thousands of years people have fasted, often for religious reasons, but the health benefits are undeniable. The body was made to fast, that is why it’s natural to go 8-10 hours a night without eating. This allows the body to burn through the carbohydrates and start to burn fat. Fat is where the toxins are stored. The body needs to enter a stage known as ketosis in order to “clean house” so to speak. If you’re looking to feel better and drop some pounds, set your eating hours between 10am and 6pm. This gives the body lots of great time to reset.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, energy drinks are DANGEROUS!  They are full caffeine, taurine, b-vitamins, and other stimulating substances and studies have shown time and time again that excessive use can lead to heart problems.  Energy drink producers know their how to target students and young adults.  They offer a quick fix after a late night’s work. A drink every now and then can’t hurt, right?  Well, think again.  A new study out of McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston found that even drinking a single energy drink can have a negative impact on blood vessel function.  Next time you need a quick fix, go the natural route with either a cup of coffee or tea. Read more!

The holidays are just around the corner. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Are you prepared for this holiday season? I am not talking about presents, parties, and wrapping. I am talking about setting your goals and establishing limits. Start now and define exactly what your holidays are going to look like. For example, don’t over schedule, set a limit of perhaps 5 parties over the course of two months. Also, give yourself a cheat day when it comes to food. If you are only eating sweets once a week instead of once a day, you can prevent the addition of those holiday pounds. Lastly, be sure to set limits on your day, both work and night life. You need to be sure you are getting enough sleep so that you can function during this busy time and not get burned out. A little prep can make your holidays healthier and more enjoyable. How often are you looking at your skin? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. You should do a thorough skin evaluation on yourself at least once a year. Make sure someone else is also checking those hard to see places, like your back. Believe it or not, 70,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year right here in the United States. When looking at moles, notice any changes, irregular borders, the color of the mole, and the size. Talk to your doctor about the moles you have and don’t assume they are nothing to worry about. If caught early, skin cancers can be removed and the cancer can be stopped. Also, be sure to use SPF 30 when out in the sun and use it year round, not just in the summer months. Furthermore, avoid tanning beds. No tan is worth your life. Staying Young and staying healthy is easier than you think. Feeling depressed lately? Are your relationship failing? It could be due to your cell phone. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. A new study out of Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business showed a correlation between cell phone use and relationships and mental health. The problems have gotten so bad that there is actually a new term – phubbing, which means partner phone snubbing. How often are you talking to your partner and then get distracted by the ding of a message or habit of constantly checking your phone? Save your relationship with these easy tips. Turn your phone off when you are on a date with your significant other – everyone else can wait. Set certain times to check your phone instead of checking it constantly. Lastly, if your significant other tells you they are annoyed by your phone – listen to them and make changes. Trust me, you can love your phone, but it can’t love you back!
