According to a new study published in the International Journal of Cardiology, people who have had a heart attack or stroke and who are on a statin drug will do better and decrease the risk for an additional episode if they combine that statin with a Mediterranean diet. Both statins and the Mediterranean diet reduce inflammation, but when used together, the reduction of systemic inflammation is even greater.

Show Topic: Ketogenic Diet- Understanding it with Thom King

Co-Hosts:  Judy Gaman, Mark Anderson, Walter Gaman

Guest: Thom King

Segment 1:

There are so many diets out there and the New Year is often the time when people decide to make changes to their diet. We decided to do a show today on the Ketogenic Diet and here in a bit, we’re bringing on Thom King author of the book Man Gone Keto

  • Funny discussion about holidays in a home of mixed dietary restrictions
  • Hosts discuss different diets they’ve tried over the course of their lives (best and worst so far)
  • We chose the Keto diet because it is actually published in the medical literature and sometimes used as part of the treatment plan for neurological disorders, epilepsy and some cancers
  • Ketogenic diet dates back to 1923 with Dr. Russell Wilder at the Mayo Clinic using it for the treatment of epilepsy
  • Keto diets can vary, but they mostly stem from the classic Keto diet which rearranges the macronutrients: the fat, protein, carb ratio. In the Classic Keto diet 90% of calories come from fat in a classic Ketogenic Diet, while 6% come from protein, and 4% come from carb
  • The purpose of KETO is to keep the body in a state of Ketosis, which in turn, enhances the ability of mitochondria, the power plants of our cells. This increases our energy and reduces inflammation and oxidative stress.
  • Types of Keto diets include: Classic, Modified Ketogenic, MCT oil Diet, Low Gylcemic Index treatment, and Modified Adkins

DOC SHOCK

This is so exciting and we have to hand it to the research team at University of California – Berkeley. If you or someone you know suffers from Parkinson’s or Seizures, your life may change forever. They have discovered a closed-loop system that can listen to and correct brain waves at the same time and in the same region. It’s like a pacemaker for the brain. Unlike some of the other brain stimulators, this is a smart system that learns the patient’s waves and responds appropriately and it’s also external.

If drinking less or not at all is on your goal list, you may have made the right choice. A new study out of Brown University shows the link between drinking even a few alcoholic beverages and the changes in you genetically. It turns out that alcohol hijacks the memory formation pathway and changes the way neurons express proteins. This is what causes the brain to have craving. It only takes a few drinks drinks to change how memories are formed at the fundamental, molecular level.

Did you know how you use olive oil will determine the health benefits. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Olive oil, which is most known for the role it plays in the healthy Mediterranean Diet, is filled with anti-oxidants. These anti-oxidants help your body fight off oxidative stress, the kind that causes inflammation and leads to disease. But – did you know that heating the olive oil actually reduces its benefits? It’s best to use olive oil as part of a dressing or use it for dipping. You may have noticed that there are all types of olive oils at the store. Pick up the extra virgin olive oil which is the one with the most antioxidants. Studies have shown that consuming a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil per day can actually decrease your risk of dying from a stroke or heart attack. If you’re used to using olive oil to sauté with, you may want to switch your hot dishes to avocado oil because it can stay beneficial at higher temperatures.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas a global leader in anti-aging and preventative health. How nutty are you? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Many people avoid nuts because they think they’re high in fat. While it’s true that nuts do have fat, it’s a good fat. The kind of fat that is good for your brain and encourages sharper thinking. Nuts may also aid in weight loss and the prevention of diabetes or metabolic syndrome. Research shows that people who eat nuts often have a higher metabolism. As far as nutrition, you can count on nuts to supply your body with vitamin E for healthy skin and magnesium which helps regulate several parts of your health, including your sleep cycle. So, next time you’re at the store, be sure to grab nuts, not chips, to snack on. Some of my personal favorites because of their high nutrient levels are pistachios and walnuts. Not sure which ones you like best? Go for a container of mixed nuts – but be sure to avoid nuts that have been salted. The flu is coming, but do you know how to protect yourself? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Each year, the flu accounts for more than 31 million outpatient visits, some of those resulting in hospitalization. Keep in mind that the flu can also result in death. That’s why the CDC has put out a call to “Take 3” when it comes to protecting yourself. Step 1 – Get your flu vaccine. While it doesn’t protect against all strains, it does protect against the most common. Step 2 – Take preventative actions like washing your hands, disinfecting door handles, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. The third and final step is to see your healthcare provider if you think you may have the flu. There are very good antiviral medications that can help reduce the severity of the flu and help you get back to what I like to call the land of the living.
