Scientists have created an e-bandage that sends electrical pulses over an injury to speed up healing.  It works by converting natural skin movements, caused by something as simple as breathing, into a therapeutic electrical field.  The bandage is made of sheets from sheets from polytetrafluoroethylene, copper foil, and polyethylene terephthalate.  The healing properties of the bandage were tested on rats. Wounds with the e-bandage began to close at 3 days.  The wounds without the e-bandage took about 12 days to close.

How’s your breath?  Do you use mouthwash?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Mouthwash is a great way to prevent bad breath and improve dental hygiene.  In fact, many dentists recommend the use of mouthwash daily.  But, did you know it may increase blood pressure.  New research published in the journal: Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, shows that antiseptic mouthwash kills good oral bacteria that are responsible for converting dietary nitrate into nitric oxide (NO).  Nitric oxide aids in regulating blood pressure and without it, blood pressure begins to increase.  Don’t throw away the mouthwash just yet.  The study was relatively small and more research needs to be completed.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you have osteoporosis?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Yoga is a great way to increase flexibility and aid in mental health.  Before now, it was believed that yoga was a great way to help relieve symptoms of osteoporosis.  However, that may not be the case.  New research out of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN found that if you suffer from osteoporosis, some poses may cause bone injuries or further existing tissue and bone damage.  It’s important to remember that not all yoga poses are bad.  Some of them can be modified to prevent these types of injuries.  If something feels painful, stop.  If you suffer from osteoporosis, talk to your doctor before starting new exercise programs.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. How many times have you turned up the music while trying to work?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Music has a way of transporting our minds and for years it has been thought to increase productivity in the workplace.  New research from University of Gävle, University of Central Lancashire, and Lancaster University found that this may not be as true as we thought.  Scientists compared the productivity of people who worked in quiet conditions to those who worked with music playing.  They found that music can significantly impair a person’s ability to solve tasks and work creatively.  So, if you need to have a productive day at work, you may want to rethink the headphones.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.
