Are you constantly bumping into things?  It may be your brain’s fault.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Our vision provides us with a sense of our surroundings.  Until now, it has remained a mystery how our brain and vision work together to perceive the geometry of our surroundings.  New research out of Columbia University's Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute and Aalto University in Finland found a region of the brain that orients us in our space, thus keeping us from bumping into objects.  They achieved this by using functional MRIs and magnetoencephalography.  Using these technologies, scientists were able to see where spatial recognition occurred in the brain and how quickly it emerged.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you have a family history of colon cancer?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  A colorectal cancer vaccine may be available in the near future.  Results from phase 1 of a recent clinical trial were published in the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer and they were promising.  The trial consisted of 10 participants with either type 1 or 2 colon cancer.  The vaccine was administered to each individual and they returned for blood work at days 30, 90, and 180.  The blood work showed evidence of activated killer T cells— which are used to destroy colon cancer cells.  These results pave the way for more research.  The vaccine also had no serious side effects! Without a family history of colon cancer, screenings should begin at age 50.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Is it nature or nurture?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  When it comes to obesity and type 2 diabetes, science may provide an answer.  That answer is epigenetics.  Epigenetics is the methylation of genes—without altering the genetic code.  The methylation acts as a “light switch”, turning genes on and off.  New research out of Lund University in Sweden found that the number of epigenetic modifications made throughout the genome could be a predictor of a person’s BMI.  Even diet has the capability to affect gene expression.  Scientists have found that it’s easier to turn on epigenetic changes through overfeeding than dieting.  Even a 5-day high fat diet, altered gene expression.  Talk to your doctor if you have questions regarding your weight or diabetes.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. It’s time for another mental health check. Women listen up!  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  It’s popular belief that exercise can help treat depression, but new research shows this may not help everyone.  According to the WHO, depression is on the rise and is the number one cause of disability worldwide. Much research has show that exercise may be just as effective at treating depression as antidepressants.  According to new research out of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the benefits of exercise when treating depression may vary in men and women.  In the study, the link between depression and exercise only manifested in men, not women.  Meaning, women did not experience symptom relief from exercise.  But remember, this is only one study and exercise should always be your first line of defense. Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of depression.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are you looking for ways to lower your blood pressure?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  In 2016, nearly one million people died of heart disease.  A new study out of Pennsylvania State University in State College researched the properties of walnuts and the affects they have on heart health.  They were able to link walnut consumption to lower blood pressure.  Through their research, scientists found that walnut consumption can also decrease cardiovascular disease risk.  But, before you get too excited, there is a catch.  In order for the snack to aid in heart health, they must be consumed as part of a diet low in saturated fats.  Talk to your doctor if you have questions about your heart health.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you think that certain food additives aren’t bad for you?  Think again.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  E171 is a food additive used as a coloring agent.  It’s prevalent in various foods, such as: candy, cake-icing, and chewing gum.  A 2018 study found that the consumption of E171 lead to the formation of colon cancer tumors in mice.  Another study that was recently published in the journal Environmental Science: Nano found that the additive also changed the cell function and upkeep of the GI tract, damaging necessary self-protective mechanisms.  France is planning on a ban of this additive starting early next year.  Hopefully, the US will jump on the bandwagon.  It’s time to start checking your food labels and look for products that have no artificial colors or additives.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.  The US is currently facing an opioid epidemic.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  In 2017 the US Department of Health and Human Services, referred to as the HHS, declared the epidemic a public health emergency.  Nearly 130 people die daily due to an opioid related overdose.  So how did we get here?  According to the HHS, in the 1990s, pharmaceutical companies told the medical community that opioids did not possess addictive qualities.  Practitioners then began prescribing them at higher rates.  This led to widespread misuse before the medical community realized the medications were highly addictive. Surgeons and dentists are often too liberal with opioid use, so beware and ask for alternate medications instead. Seek medical help if you or a loved one are experiencing an opioid addiction.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. The Study’s that support drinking wine for your health have been debunked. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. I know many of you were thrilled when the so called experts came out telling you that drinking was good for you, but it turns out they were wrong. That’s bad news for the 2.3 billion people who drink alcohol. Even the old red wine twist is no longer valid, as a matter of fact, you’d have to drink bottles a night to have enough Resveratrol to help with anti-aging. Not only is heavy drinking bad for you, even just a few glasses of we per night can increase your stroke risk by 10 to 15%. For those that drink more than that, the risk goes up to 35%. Why the change of heart on this topic? We can now look at the way alcohol affects our genetic expression, something that we didn’t have the ability to do in the past. A special thanks to Oxford University's Nuffield Department of Population Health for helping unveil the truth behind the bottle. Are you a protein shake junkie? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Protein shakes and drinks are all the rage, but too much of a good thing is not always a good thing. A new study out of the University of Sydney looked at the effects of too much protein and found that it could actually shorten your life. Keep in mind that the average adult needs between 50-60 grams of protein spread out over a day. That’s combined protein from all sources. Many protein bars and shakes on the market contain close to that. What happens to all that excess protein? Well, it could be making you fat and or depressed. My advice to you is to limit your protein shakes or bars to no more than three a week and use them as meal replacements and never as just a snack.
