Do you or a loved one suffer from Bipolar Disorder?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  According to the World Health Organization, 60 million people worldwide are affected by bipolar disorder.  The disorder causes manic and depressive episodes.  During manic episodes, a person can feel like they have unlimited energy and hardly sleep.  Depressive episodes are the opposite, a person has low to little energy and loses interest in day to day activities.  A new article published in The Lancet Psychiatry suggests that early care is key to helping people with bipolar disorder have a better quality of life.  People living with the disorder have a higher risk for self harm and suicide.  The earlier the treatment, the fewer relapses.  Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of bipolar disorder.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you or a loved one suffer from a food allergy?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Milk, eggs, and peanuts are some of the most common allergies.  New research from Boston Children's Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston found a correlation between gut bacteria and food allergies.  Turns out, when certain strains of bacteria are missing, a person is more likely to have a certain food allergy.  Making these bacteria essential for proper digestion.  They work by triggering T-cells in the immune system and altering their state, so that they don’t cause an immune reaction to that particular food.  Private companies are working on bacteria compositions for human trials—making food allergy treatments possible in as soon as 5 years.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Women—do you sleep in a dark room?  If not, you may want to start.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  New research from the NIH found that women who are exposed to artificial light during sleep, whether it be from TV or a turned-on light, have a higher risk of becoming obese.  The research included more than 43,000 women and spanned over 5 and half years.  They not only found it can lead to obesity, but also large amounts of light in a participant’s sleep environment led to a higher BMI and waist to hip ratio.  Sleep durations were also shorter and healthy eating choices were lower in these individuals.   You may want to start turning off the TV and making sure your room is dark before falling asleep.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are you a dog lover?  If so, I’m about to give you another reason to love them even more.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and people often believe that they can “sniff out” disease. Unlike humans who have 5 million olfactory receptors, beagles have 225 million.  Researchers from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine used this to their advantage and trained three beagles to “sniff out” non-small cell lung cancer in blood samples.  The beagles were able to successfully identify the presence of cancer with over 95% specificity.  Next, the researchers plan to train the dogs how to sniff out other forms of cancer-- not just from blood samples, but also from breath samples.  Maybe dogs really are “man’s best friend”.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are you a raw egg eater?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Raw eggs can be found in ice cream, eggnog, hollandaise sauce, and uncooked cookie dough.  The FDA estimates that 30 people die each year from eating Salmonella contaminated eggs.  Salmonella can be found in the reproductive organs of some hens.  Things like age, stress levels, vaccinations, and even the diet of a hen can affect Salmonella risk.  You can prevent Salmonella contamination by pasteurizing the eggs.  If you have cancer, HIV, diabetes, or a have had an organ transplant, you are at a higher risk for developing foodborne illnesses.  Talk to your doctor if you develop a fever, abdominal cramps, vomiting, or diarrhea after consuming raw eggs.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  A new type of treatment may soon be available to people with rheumatoid arthritis thanks to the European League Against Rheumatism.  They found that vagus nerve stimulation through a small neurostimulator helped with symptoms.  Surprisingly, the participants who received stimulation once per day had better symptom control than those that received it four times per day.  During the study, participants also had a decrease of more than 30% in cytokine levels.  Although it’s unlikely that everyone with rheumatoid arthritis will be walking around with an implant in their head, the study did pave the way for other therapies besides medication to treat symptoms.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Have you ever heard of brown fat?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Brown fat is often referred to as good fat in the body.  It turns nutrients into energy by activating uncoupling protein 1.  Unlike, white or yellow fat, brown fat isn’t a result of excess calories.  The School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham studied the link between coffee consumption and uncoupling protein 1 activation.  They found that drinking 1 cup of coffee a day helped stimulate brown fat regions and aid in metabolic function.  This research shows promise in helping with the obesity crisis in America.  Now, remember, before you go to crazy with the coffee—drinking it in high amounts can cause serious health problems.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Autism is on the rise and scientists may have linked it to consumption of processed foods.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Previous research found that autistic children lack beneficial strains of bacteria in their gut microbiome.  Because of this, a lot of autistic children struggle with constipation, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.  A new study out of University of Central Florida studied the link between propionic acid, a common food preservative, and autism.  In the study, too much propionic acid in the gut lining led to a buildup of glial cells, which damaged molecular pathways that inhibited neurons from sending information to the body.  Researchers also found that pregnant women who eat high amounts of processed foods put their unborn babies at risk for autism.
