Do you use e-cigarettes? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Vaping, or also known as an e-cigarette, related deaths are on the rise in the US.  Originally, vaping was a tool designed to help wean smokers from cigarettes.  However, vaping has been heavily abused by teens, exposing them to the dangers of nicotine.  In fact, many states have increased the smoking age to 21- this includes e-cigarettes.  The FDA is currently investing over 120 cases of neurological issues, such has seizures, that have been linked to vaping--and according to the CDC, over 450 cases of serious lung illness have also been linked to vaping.  If you’re a parent, let your children know about the dangers of vaping.  And if you use e-cigarettes, talk to your doctor about how to wean yourself off.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Meat eaters, pescatarians, vegetarians, and vegans—listen up! This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  A new study published in BMJ looked at correlations between diet and risk factors for stroke and ischemic heart disease, or IHD.  They put participants into three different groups: meat eaters, pescatarians (the only meat they eat is fish), and vegetarians or vegans (plant-based diet).  The researchers found that pescatarians had a 13% lower risk of developing IHD than meat eaters.  Vegetarians had a 22% lower risk!  Shocker, right?  But here’s where it gets interesting.  Vegetarians had a 20% higher risk for stroke.  In the past, studies have argued that stroke risks were lower in vegetarians, but they were only looking at death related strokes.  So, which is the best diet?  Maybe a little bit of everything in moderation.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are you getting your exercise in?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  In today’s world, most jobs are sedentary, meaning more people spend time sitting than moving.  Well, Norwegian University of Science and Technology studied the health impacts of a sedentary lifestyle.  In the past, there had been numerous studies that linked inactivity to increased mortality.  However, this study was different.  Researchers wanted to know what happens when physical activity and behavior changes over time.  In other words, what happens someone who was once active stops.  They found that being inactive for 20 years can make someone twice as likely to die, especially of cardiovascular disease, earlier than someone who is active. So, what are you waiting for? Get moving! This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you suffer from migraines? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  New research from University of Waterloo, in Ontario may indicate a link between migraines and dementia risk.  They gathered data from over 670 participants, 65 and older, living with either dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease.  Another set of participants, without cognitive problems, were added as a baseline.  After accounting for different variables, the research showed that people with dementia were 3 times more likely to suffer from migraines than those without and people with Alzheimer’s Disease were 4 times as likely.  Early detection is key to slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease and knowing that migraines are a risk factor could help patients get the treatment they need sooner.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. An apple a day may actually keep the doctor away.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  New research from Edith Cowan University suggests that high Flavonoid consumption may decrease risk of heart disease and cancer.  The researchers studied over 53 thousand participants for 23 years.  People who consumed moderate to high levels, around 500mg, were less likely to die from heart disease or cancer.  Flavonoids are found in citrus fruit, apples, tea, and legumes.  Now, you may thinking red wine has flavonoids, I’ll just drink that instead.  Well, research has shown that drink a day does not keep the doctor away and can cause inflammation throughout the body—increasing cancer risk.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you suffer from migraines?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Migraines affect nearly one billion people worldwide.  Not only are they characterized as severe headaches, but they also often cause nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.  A study published in the American Journal of Medicine found that caffeine intake may increase migraine headache risk.  Researchers studied the habits of 98 adults prone to chronic migraines.  Participants who consumed 3 or more caffeinated beverages a day were more likely to develop a migraine within 24 hours.  Unfortunately, because caffeine amount varies drink to drink, more research will need to be completed to properly quantify the amount needed to increase migraine risk.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Did you know that women are more likely than men to develop Alzheimer’s Disease?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Over 5.8 million people in the US have Alzheimer’s Disease and 2/3 of them are women.  Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found a link between high midlife stress and Alzheimer’s risk.  But it’s only pertains to women!  They studied 900 participants for over 20 years.  During this time, they asked both male and female participants if they had experienced any stressful or traumatic events.  Both sexes reported roughly the same percentage in each category.  But, over time, only women showed a decrease in memory function.  Talk to your doctor if you or a loved one are experiencing symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.
