Do you suffer from migraines? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  New research from University of Waterloo, in Ontario may indicate a link between migraines and dementia risk.  They gathered data from over 670 participants, 65 and older, living with either dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease.  Another set of participants, without cognitive problems, were added as a baseline.  After accounting for different variables, the research showed that people with dementia were 3 times more likely to suffer from migraines than those without and people with Alzheimer’s Disease were 4 times as likely.  Early detection is key to slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease and knowing that migraines are a risk factor could help patients get the treatment they need sooner.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. An apple a day may actually keep the doctor away.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  New research from Edith Cowan University suggests that high Flavonoid consumption may decrease risk of heart disease and cancer.  The researchers studied over 53 thousand participants for 23 years.  People who consumed moderate to high levels, around 500mg, were less likely to die from heart disease or cancer.  Flavonoids are found in citrus fruit, apples, tea, and legumes.  Now, you may thinking red wine has flavonoids, I’ll just drink that instead.  Well, research has shown that drink a day does not keep the doctor away and can cause inflammation throughout the body—increasing cancer risk.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you suffer from migraines?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Migraines affect nearly one billion people worldwide.  Not only are they characterized as severe headaches, but they also often cause nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.  A study published in the American Journal of Medicine found that caffeine intake may increase migraine headache risk.  Researchers studied the habits of 98 adults prone to chronic migraines.  Participants who consumed 3 or more caffeinated beverages a day were more likely to develop a migraine within 24 hours.  Unfortunately, because caffeine amount varies drink to drink, more research will need to be completed to properly quantify the amount needed to increase migraine risk.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Did you know that women are more likely than men to develop Alzheimer’s Disease?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Over 5.8 million people in the US have Alzheimer’s Disease and 2/3 of them are women.  Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found a link between high midlife stress and Alzheimer’s risk.  But it’s only pertains to women!  They studied 900 participants for over 20 years.  During this time, they asked both male and female participants if they had experienced any stressful or traumatic events.  Both sexes reported roughly the same percentage in each category.  But, over time, only women showed a decrease in memory function.  Talk to your doctor if you or a loved one are experiencing symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you take a warm bath or shower at night to help you sleep?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  It’s a known fact that taking a warm bath or shower before bed can help you sleep better at night.  But, does the time of night matter?  Surprisingly, a time frame has never been established, until now.  Researchers out of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin set out to find the perfect time to bathe before bed.  They did this by searching through over 5,300 different studies.   They found that bathing 1-2 hours before bed is the ideal for better sleep.  So, if you’re having trouble sleeping, draw up a nice warm bath.  Just make sure you’re out at least an hour before you plan on going to sleep.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are you trying to prevent heart disease by taking low dose aspirin?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  New research out of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School suggests that taking low-dose aspirin, or “baby aspirin”, once a day can do more harm than good—if a doctor hasn’t told you to take it.  It’s estimated that around 6.6 million people in the US are taking low-dose aspirin—even though they haven’t been advised to do so.  Numerous studies have found that the risk for internal bleeding outweighs the benefits of taking aspirin to prevent heart disease.  Now, if you have been advised to take low-dose aspirin by your doctor, continue to take it.  Talk to your doctor if you have questions about preventing heart disease.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Is the paleo diet actually good for you?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  New research out of four different research institutions in Australia suggest the paleo diet may be doing more harm than good.  They found that people following the diet had higher levels of trimethylamine N-oxide, a compound found in the gut that increases risk for heart disease.  One of the paleo diet’s ‘claims to fame’ was that it aided in gut health.  While it may help with some areas, it’s not helping the heart.  The diet eliminates whole grains, which are known to aid in heart health.  The researchers believe that the lack of consumption of these grains led to a change in the gut bacteria, increasing levels of trimethylamine N-oxide.  Talk to your doctor if you have questions about the paleo diet.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.
