The Staying Young Show

Show Title: “Mental Illness – Challenges and Triumphs with Special Guests Raymund King and Jason Bee”

Co-Hosts: Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guest: Raymund King and Jason Bee in Studio

Segment 1

This entire episode is about raising awareness of mental illness and discussing the challenges and triumphs of those struggling with depression, anxiety, and bi-polar disorder.

  • Every year, about 42.5 million American adults (or 18.2 percent of the total adult population in the United States) suffer from some mental illness, enduring conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia according to new statistics
  • What role does our current busy lifestyle play in anxiety and depression
  • There are two main types of bipolar disorder (once known as manic depression): bipolar disorder I and bipolar disorder II. Symptoms include dramatic moods swings between euphoria and severe depression; patients may have hallucinations or delusions.
  • Patients with bipolar I have the most severe symptoms; bipolar II patients have more moderate symptoms.
  • Study researchers say health professionals should recognize a third and milder category --sub-threshold bipolar disorder.

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK

THAT MUSIC MEANS IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

New research shows that the rise in Celiac disease is due to a virus that may go unnoticed. Researchers noticed that some areas of the world that have high genetic predisposition to celiac disease don’t develop the disease while other areas do. This lead the researchers to look at environmental causes or influences. You may be aware of the rotovirus (intestinal) or the norovirus (cold) but there is a seemingly symptomless one called the reovirus. Reovirus + gluten + genetic abnormalities = celiac disease according to research published in Popular Science. http://www.popsci.com/virus-triggers-celiac-disease
