Did you know that moving to the country may help your child’s asthma and allergy problems? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. While it’s easy to think that farm living could increase allergies and asthma, research tells us differently. Living on a farm may be just what the doctor ordered. A University of Zurich study shows that sialic acid found in farm animals actually protects against inflammation of lung tissue. About 30% of children have some sort of allergy or asthma, but this does not include children who live on farms, who have little to no respiratory issues. Petting farm animals like cows or drinking milk straight from the diary, can give your body an extra layer of protection, so if you’re thinking of moving to the country – now you have a great excuse.
