Are you one of the 65-70% of pregnant women who reach for acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Acetaminophen has long been used by pregnant women for relief of pain or fever, but new research shows that this may not be such a great idea. One recent study showed a link between ADHD in children when the mother had taken acetaminophen for seven or more consecutive days. This was especially true if the mother took it before 18 weeks or after 32 weeks. Another study found a link between Tylenol use and future fertility of the offspring. Another study revealed that 10% mothers who took acetaminophen had children with language delays in early childhood.  Why is all this so tricky? At this point, acetaminophen is the only known fever reliever that had been proven relatively safe for pregnancy. A mother that suffers a high fever that is left untreated puts her unborn child in grave danger. There is so much to know about healthy living. That is why this Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by the leaders in preventative and proactive Medicine – Executive Medicine of Texas. Learn more at EMTexas.com or call 800-910-EXEC
