Show Topic: Why Pets Improve Our Health

Co-Hosts:  Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guest: Julie Steines

Segment 1

Intro

There is so much research showing the health benefits of owning a pet. Perhaps that is why therapy dogs have been so good for our veterans and others who has suffered through stress or loss. We have a special guest coming up, Julie Steines who is the author of the best-selling book Norbert’s Little Lessons for a BIG Life. I know you have seen Norbert lately – he’s that cute little therapy dog that has been all over the media lately.

  • Share our pet stories
  • Ways we have seen pets help patients
  • Why an iguana may not be your best bet!

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK-THAT MUSIC MEANS ITS TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

New research from Duke University shows that women are better at surviving crisis then men are. The researchers went back 250 years and analyzed mortality of those who lived through famine, disease and natural disaster. I don’t find this surprising because even in the blue zones, the areas where people live the longest, the women still outlive the men by an average of six months. Some scientists believe that estrogen may play a significant role due to its ability to boost and protect the immune system. I think it’s just innate – even in newborns that are born premature, the survival rate of females is higher than males.
