Could your grandchildren help you live longer? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. I personally have four grandchildren that keep me on my toes. I didn’t need a study to tell me how young they make me feel, but new research published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior shows that grandparents who spend time with their grandchildren on a regular basis had a 37% lower risk of dying compared to grandparents in the study who did not spend time with them. The researchers felt that it was partially due to the increased activity. We all know those little guys can keep up running, but it could be something more. I wouldn’t be surprised if they discovered a chemical reaction in our brains that makes us want to stick around and watch them grow up. If you have grandchildren, be sure to get a little more time in with them – it may just help you live a longer and healthier life.
