According to the American Cancer Society, 2018 could bring around 100,000 cases of colorectal cancer. Do you know how to protect yourself? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. While genetics play a role in these cancers, so does lifestyle. While you can’t control your genes, you can take control of your nutrition. First, cut back on red meat and opt for more vegetables and fruits. Also, foods high in fiber keep things moving through the colon so it can flush out. Probiotic rich foods like those found in yogurt and sauerkraut help keep your gut microbiome filled with good bacteria. Prebiotics, like asparagus also are great because they feed the good bacteria. Even if you eat all the right foods and live a healthy lifestyle, regular physical exams are still important. Be sure to report any changes in bowel habits or rectal bleeding. Most all colon cancer is curable if found early. This Stay Young Medical Minute was brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a global leader in preventative and proactive health.
