Are your breasts asymmetrical? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. A 2015 study published in Libertas Academica found that women with asymmetrical breasts were more likely to develop breast cancer. Before you begin to panic, a little asymmetry is normal. Menopause, menstrual cycles, breastfeeding, and the use of birth control pills can cause breast asymmetry. However, if your breasts vary in size of about 20%, you may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. A mammogram can determine the cause of asymmetry. It is recommended that women ages 40-55 have a mammogram every year. After 55, every 1-2 years is recommended. It is important to talk to your doctor if you notice any changes in your breasts.
