Listen up women! A newly published study from the University of

Copenhagen has confirmed a link between hormonal contraceptives and

depression. The largest of its kind, with one million Danish women between

the ages of 15 and 34 tracked for a total of 13 years and they found that

taking the combined oral contraceptive were 23% more likely to be

diagnosed with depression and those using progestin-only pills (also known

as “the mini-pill”) were 34% more likely. If you are at an increased risk for

depression or suicidal thoughts/actions you need to be aware of this new

study, and take extra precautions like talking to your doctor about

contraception options and monitoring any side effects carefully.

Are you CPR certified? If not, you should be. Up to 150,000 people a year die

unnecessarily because too few people can give proper and efficient first aid care to

others? A study from the UK suggest that nearly 900 people who choke to death,

2,500 who suffocate by a blocked airway and 29,000 heart attack victims all die

because those around them are unable or unknowledgeable about proper health and

safety precautions. Can you imagine being in that situation? I can’t! The study

conducted a survey of more than 2,000 people and found that 59 per cent would

not feel confident trying to save a life-- -and over half of them would not even

try—even if It were a loved one! You can make a difference and you should. I

challenge you to take a CPR or first aid class within the next 30 days.

As we enter the new year, and everyone tries to stick to those healthy

habits—this fact is an important one to hear! A new study showed that early risers

who exercise on an empty stomach BEFORE breakfast can burn up to 20% more

body fat that those that are full or choose to burn calories at the end of the

workday. The researchers found that early in the morning you are more likely to

increase energy as you workout-- -allowing you to do more and choose better work

out options. A much better option than trying to figure it out at the end of a long

day. Also, research shows that eating after a workout on a truly empty stomach

will boost your metabolism. So, if you’re not a morning person – it’s time to make

some changes and become one.

How many books are on your bookshelf? It may be an indication of how long you’re going live. Turns out, the more books you read, the longer you live. A new study from Yale University School of Public Health found a link between reading more books and increased longevity and life expectancy. These researchers examined data that involved 3,635 people who participated in a large health study and answered several questions about their reading habits. The data was divided into three groups: people who read books up to three and half hours weekly, people who read more than three and a half hours, and people who read no books at all. In the end, experts found that book readers who spend time up to 3.5 hours a week reading a book were 17 percent less likely to die over the 12-year follow-up period, while those who read more than the three hour-mark were 23 percent less likely to die.

Did you know that working longer may help you live longer? A new study from Oregon State University suggests that working past the ripe old age of 65 could add years to your life. Researchers analyzed around 18 years of data and found that those who stayed on the job past the traditional retirement age of 65 lived longer than those that retired at that age or before. In fact, healthy elderly people who worked a year past the traditional retirement age of 65 had an 11 percent lower mortality risk! That’s pretty significant! Just remember that on the other side of that coin, unhealthy people who worked a bit beyond 65 showed a 9 percent decreased risk of death-- -so make sure you are getting regular physicals and check-ups, especially as you age.

Tough topic for this show, but one that needs a thoughtful discussion. There are 16.9 million caregivers in the US, and of that number 5.6 million of them are caring for wounded veterans. While some of those caregivers are the husbands--most of them are the wives. These men and women never get the proper training and they are kind of left to figure it out as they go--this show is for them. We will inspire those caregivers to keep going, and keep helping. We will give tips and tricks for proper care, and times to note when to seek professional help.

Trauma can change your life. When someone goes through a traumatic event like an accident or the death of a loved one, they may suffer some mental stress, but did you know the rest of their body may also respond negatively? Trauma and intense stress can lead to a decreased immune function and make one more susceptible to illness. It can also cause an inflammatory response where joints swell and the body starts to ache. If you’ve been through something traumatic, be sure to take time to heal.

When we think of food allergies, we often think about someone being rushed to the emergency room because they ingested something that could kill them. The truth is, we can be allergic or intolerant to some foods and not even know it. Some of the most common allergies are dairy, eggs, soy, nuts, gluten, and fish. While eating these things may not send you to the hospital, one of them may be the source of your joint pain or your sniffles. If you have symptoms that nobody has figured out – try eliminating things from your diet and track your symptoms or lack thereof.
