According to research by the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program, one in 10 high school athletes in the United States who play contact sports suffers a concussion each year. Concussions are serious business, and concussions in children is even more serious. Once someone has had head trauma, they are more vulnerable to subsequent concussions and increased trauma. Are we really doing enough to protect our children and young adults? In my humble opinion, our minds are our biggest asset and no sport, no matter how good you are, is worth the long term effects of a concussion or multiple concussions. Even if the goal is a college scholarship, if the brain doesn’t work well enough to use that degree, it would be a waste of a good education.

For some, passing a kidney stone ranks as high on the pain scale as childbirth. But what if there were a way to ride out that process by literally going for a ride? Dr. David Wartinger, a Michigan State University urologist, professor emeritus claims that a trip to Walt Disney World may be just what the doctor ordered. The trick here, apparently, is to ride Big Thunder Mountain. In a pilot study, published in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, Wartinger rode Big Thunder Mountain at Walt Disney World 20 times while wearing a backpack with a synthetic 3D hollow kidney model. The model contained kidney stones measuring 4 millimeters or smaller. He found that sitting in the last car had a 64 percent passage rate versus a 16 percent passage rate in the first few cars. Sometimes folks, truth is stranger than fiction.

I challenge you to find a store-bought salad dressing made with 100-percent extra-virgin olive oil, a high-quality, good-for- you anti-inflammatory oil. What you’ll find instead is a number of dressings, including so-called “olive oil” vinaigrettes, that contain inexpensive, inflammatory oils like soybean oil tends to be most common in these products. Like many vegetable and seed oils, soybean oil is highly refined and so stripped of nutrients. Plus, inflammatory oils like soybean oil are processed at a high temperature, further limiting any nutritional value and increasing the risk of the dressing becoming spoiled. Try making your own dressings and dips with “good-for- you” ingredients you can control! Be in charge of your health!

You would leave a cheese platter on the counter if you were trying to rid your house of mice would you? Likewise, when your body is being taken hostage by a cold or flu virus, it doesn't make sense to encourage the illness to stick around by giving it more strength. Sugar wreaks havoc on your immune system by suppressing it while also encouraging the growth of viruses, bacteria and microorganisms whose main job is to keep you sicker, longer. Resist the urge to snack on packaged and processed foods that have little to no nutritional value. If you need sugar, reach for an orange or some berries. Nature will always be your body’s best defense.

It’s not just a fad, there are actually healing powers in certain essential oils. For example, use Eucalyptus when you’re sick, it may help cleanse the body of toxins and the harmful microorganisms that are making you sick. Plus, it smells great and can work as a decongestant, clearing up that stuffy nose. Besides, it’s safer than most of those over the counter allergy and cold medicines. One of the most effective ways to use eucalyptus to combat a cold is by adding it to an aromatherapy diffuser before bed so you experience its healing benefits throughout the night. I also recommend making a eucalyptus steam bath for your face. Just pour a cup of boiling water into a bowl and then mix in 10 drops of the oil. Place a towel over your head and inhale deeply for five to 10 minutes of that bowl as the steam penetrates your sinuses.

Well, a new study suggested that men choose to ignore the risks and choose tasks that are dangerous given the conditions---while women usually listen to the risks and stay indoors where it's safe! Don't be a statistic---stay safe in the weather!
