No, this isn’t a gift you can buy or wrap up with a pretty bow. I’m talking about donating blood. If you’ve ever wondered where that donated blood goes, I’m going to break it down for you. 2 percent go to children with cancer and 22 percent goes to adults with cancer. 7 percent goes to pregnant women and newborns. 18 percent goes to accident victims and 24 percent goes to surgical patients. Bottom line, when you give blood it goes to help others. So pay it forward. You never know when you or a loved one will be in need. When’s the last time you smiled? I bet it’s been too long. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Often we get down and that unhappiness can last for days or even years. Here are some scientific ways to put some “happy” back in your life. Cut the commute – if you live too far away from your job move closer. Turn off the tube and start exercising – it doesn’t take much, research shows just seven minutes a day of a real workout will do it. And practice smiling. Believe it or not, just the act of making your facial muscles turn that frown upside down will increase the hormones that improve mood. So fake it until you make it by practicing your smile at least five times a day. If you do – a funny thing may happen – people will actually smile back at you too! There's so much to know about living healthy... and that's why you can find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. All men should be aware of how to screen for testicular cancer. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Testicular cancer effects men of all ages from infant to the elderly, but it is most common in men ages 20- 34. While it can happen across all races, white men seem to be the most effected. The American Cancer Society recommends that men have their testicles examined every year as part of their physical examination. They should also do self-examinations each month. Look for any change in size or shape and seek medical attention if you detect a change. While testicular cancer is easier to cure than many other cancers, some people that find it too late just don’t make it. So be proactive by doing self-exams and getting that second opinion each year at your yearly physical. Your testicles are too important to lose. There’s so much to learn about healthy living. Get started today by visiting Stay Young America.com and pick up a copy of my book Age to Perfection: How to Thrive to 100, Happy, Healthy, and Wise. That’s StayYoungAmerica.com

Do you know the fastest growing class of cancers in the united states? This is Judy Gaman. It may shock you to hear that thyroid cancer is the fastest growing cancer in the US. The thyroid is a butterfly shaped organ in the neck. It’s very important to the body and helps regulate metabolism, temperature, and much more. Sometimes the cells in the thyroid become abnormal and they can become cancerous. This is much more common in women, but it can happen in men too. If you see your physician for a physical exam and the do not exam your neck, be sure to remind them. Thyroid blood tests are also becoming a common part of yearly labs. If the physician feels something abnormal in the thyroid, they will order an ultrasound, a test that uses sound waves to detect nodules. The good news about thyroid cancer is that it is highly treatable and often resolves if removed early on. So bottom line, see your physician yearly and get your thyroid examined. There’s so much to know about health living. You can hear more Stay Young Medical Minutes and the Staying Young Radio Show episodes at StayYoungAmerica.com that’s StayYoungAmerica.com

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are the second most common infectious disease seen in primary care. Many of the strains of UTIs are resistant to antibiotic treatments. It turns out that garlic may be the answer according to a recent study published in the Pertanika Journal of Tropical Agricultural Science. Turns out that the sulfur compounds in garlic may be why garlic has been used for centuries to treat all types of infections in various countries. In the study, 82% of the antibiotic resistant bacteria was not resistant to the compounds found in the extract of garlic. Once again we have seen that natural sources are often the answer to common problems.

Listen up ladies. What do you know about uterine cancer? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The fourth largest cancer in women – uterine cancer, is something that most of us don’t talk about. The uterus is the hollow part of a female’s body that is often referred to as the womb. Uterine cancer happens when the cells within the uterus become abnormal, specifically malignant. Women who are obese or who have never had children are at a higher risk for this type of cancer. Symptoms include bleeding or abnormal vaginal discharge, pain during sex, or pain emptying the bladder. If you have any of these symptoms you need to see your doctor. They will examine you and if necessary perform a sonogram or even a biopsy if necessary. Catching this type of cancer early is the best way to have a good outcome. So ladies, pay attention to your body and never ignore symptoms. It’s up to you to seek medical attention when something doesn’t seem right. You can learn more valuable health information at StayYoungAmerica.com where you can find Stay Young Medical Minutes and full episodes of the Staying Young Show.

Do you pay attention to the temperature of your coffee or other hot drinks? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. We all do it, grab a piping hot drink to warm us up during cold weather, but did you know that sipping on drinks that are too hot can actually increase your risk for esophageal cancer? It’s true. Much of the esophageal squamous cell carcinoma that is seen today originates from cells being damaged from hot liquids. So next time you reach for that java or tea, make sure you give it some time to cool off. Over 15 thousand people die each year from esophageal cancer – don’t be one of them. Think warm, but not too hot. Also, teach this to your kids and loved ones. With a coffee shop on every corner, we need to be sure we are protecting ourselves from the hidden danger in hot drinks. There’s so much to know about healthy living. You can always turn to StayYoungAmerica.com to learn more. You can also pick up my book Stay Young: 10 Proven Steps to Ultimate Health. What do you know about preventing colon cancer? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. One of the biggest myths about colon cancer is that it is an old man disease and that it can’t happen to you. That is simply not true. Not only does colon cancer effect both men and women, it is becoming a serious problem in younger populations. A study out of University of Texas and the MD Anderson Cancer Center shows that in 15 years, one in ten colon cancers will occur in people ages 20-34. Be sure to get your colonoscopies and pay special attention to your bowel habits. If you have a change in bowel habits or if you are experiencing rectal bleeding with either bright red blood or black tar like stools, see your physician and get scheduled for a colonoscopy. I know – colonoscopies are not fun, but trust me, neither is colon cancer. And remember, colon cancer is 99% preventable because almost all cancers start as a polyp that can be easily removed.
