Something smells fishy.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Have you noticed more Omega-3 and fish oil labels hitting the shelves?  That’s because fish oil has amazing health benefits.  They contain Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin A, and Vitamin D.  Fish oils and Omega-3 fatty acids are believed to reduce the risk of prostate cancer, post-partum depression, psychosis, epilepsy, and age-related vision loss.  They can also provide behavioral improvements to children with ADHD.  If you don’t eat fish, plenty of vegetables contain Omega-3 fatty acids.  These include: fresh basil, leafy dark vegetables, flax, hempseed, and walnuts.  Although, Omega-3s can be quite helpful when it comes to your health, they can aggravate certain conditions.  Talk to your doctor about adding this supplement to your daily routine.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Learn why patients from around the globe trust Executive Medicine of Texas to their health. Visit EMTexas.com that’s EMTexas.com.

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM)

Concussion study out of Canada looking at the link between concussion and suicide. Researchers from the University of Toronto, the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and Sunnybrook Research Institute, all of Toronto, in Canada. Looked at 235,110 patients who had a concussion over a 20-year period. The patients were aged 41 years on average, evenly split between genders, and most lived in cities. The majority had no suicide attempt, hospitalization or past psychiatric disorder. In the 9.3 years following the concussion, 667 suicides occurred.

Weekday concussion incidents were associated with 519 suicides, or 29 per 100,000 people. This was triple the rate for the general population of Canada, and higher than that for military personnel. There were 148 suicides among weekend concussion patients. At 39 per 100,000, this was four times the population norm. Basically, a concussion triples or quadruples the risk of suicide.

Do you drink alcohol?  You may want to rethink the extra drink.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  A new study out of the University of Cambridge showed that even having one extra drink could shave months, even years off of your life.  According to the study, drinking excess alcohol can also lead to cardiovascular diseases.  The study consisted of 600,000 participants and spanned over 19 countries.  Shocker! Out of all of the counties, the US alcohol guidelines were found to be one of the most lenient.  The magic number is seven.  Seven STANDARD DRINKS were considered “safe”.  What’s a standard drink?  A small can of beer or a 5 ounce glass of wine.  Turns out, an extra glass a day does not keep the doctor away.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Is grilled meat increasing your blood pressure?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  It’s almost summertime.  That means it’s time to uncover your pool and break out the grill.  But, before you do, a new study from the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health may convince you otherwise.  Studies in the past have shown that certain foods can increase blood pressure.  Although, true, this new study states that the way the food is cooked can also influence blood pressure.  High temperature cooking and the “doneness” of your meat can contribute to your hypertension risk.  If you already have high blood pressure, you may want to consider having fewer cookouts and more picnics this summer.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Rheumatoid Arthritis affects more than 1.5 million people in the US.  It is an autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation in the joints.  It can also make completing day to day tasks difficult for people with this disease.  New research from Baylor College of Medicine suggests that venom from one of the world’s most dangerous scorpions could help treat Rheumatoid Arthritis.  The Indian Red Scorpion produces a toxic venom that has the power to kill a person within 72 hours after being stung.   However, according to the study, it also has Iberio toxin which targets and blocks a potassium channel that is key in the production of the disease.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Ouch! You just slammed your finger in the door.  How do you know if it’s broken or jammed?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Jammed fingers are usually caused by sports injuries, but they can also be caused by falling on your hand or slamming it in door.  These injuries can cause swelling in the joints of the finger, pain, and redness.  If your finger is broken, then you may be able to see the bone either sticking out or just deformed under the skin.  If broken, you will have little to no movement in your finger.  However, if it is jammed, you should still have function in the finger.  If your finger appears crooked, becomes numb or pale, or if you develop a fever, seek immediate medical attention.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Have you been packing on the pounds? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  It is a known fact that stress can lead to weight gain.  A new study from the journal Cell Metabolism explains why.  Stress leads to inflammation in the body.  Glucocorticoids, a steroid hormone, are released in response to the inflammation.  When under long term stress, this hormone signals the creation of fat cells.  Continuous stress can eventually lead to excessive weight gain and other health problems.  If your stress levels are through the roof, try exercising, meditating, or breathing exercises to keep tension at a safe level.  If you are still unable to control your stress, talk to your doctor.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.
