Do you think that calcium is the only way to strengthen bones? Think again.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Osteoporosis occurs when the bones weaken, making it easier for them to break.  This disease usually occurs in women after menopause.  It can be extremely painful and cause the bones to break with little impact.  This is why falls are a concern for the elderly.  A new study out of University of Missouri in Columbia showed that a diet full of soy-based proteins can lower the risk of Osteoporosis in females.  It is important to note that too much soy can lead to breast production in men.   It’s time to start reading the labels and picking foods with soy protein.  Talk to your doctor if you have questions about osteoporosis or ways to prevent it.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Learn why patients from around the globe trust Executive Medicine of Texas to their health. Visit EMTexas.com that’s EMTexas.com.

Are you breastfeeding?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Breastfeeding mothers have to increase their calorie intake to keep up their milk production.  However, sometimes, people use this as an excuse to eat whatever they want.  It is essential that the mother eats healthy so the baby can obtain the nutrients it needs to grow.  Foods like: melon, cantaloupe, prunes, oranges, carrots, pumpkin, spinach, yogurt, milk, quinoa, salmon, lean ground beef, nuts, seeds, and beans are not only good for you, but they are also good for your milk supply.  Although it seems essential after long nights, caffeine consumption while breastfeeding can lead to a cranky baby.  It is important to limit caffeine intake as well as avoiding seafood with high mercury.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Weight loss surgery can be a major factor in decreasing the risk of diabetes, hypertension and a myriad of other diseases, but a new study published in the British Journal of Surgery shows a new link between weight loss surgery and decreased risk of hormone related cancers.  The decrease is as high as 77% for breast, prostate, and endometrial cancers. The type of surgery matters though, the study found that gastric bypass had the decrease in these hormone related cancers but on the flip side is that it created an 84% increased risk for colorectal cancer. Goji?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Goji berries have been gaining popularity over the years and it’s no surprise why.  These small berries are jam packed with antioxidants that protect against oxidative stress, UV damage, and free radicals.  Goji berries can also help fight against anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders.  If you’re a diabetic, you may want to consider buying low or no sugar Goji juice.  Research has shown that it helps control and mediate insulin release, balancing sugar levels.  Goji berries can also help prevent liver damage, protect against cancer, and help promote healthy skin.  This superfood is definitely one you want to add to your diet.  Talk to your doctor if you have questions about the health benefits of Goji berries.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. What’s that smell?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Did you know that there are different types of smell disorders?  One of the most common being phantosmia.  Phantosmia is a disorder that causes people to smell things that aren’t actually there.  They are often referred to as “phantom smells”.  You may think it sounds great--who wouldn’t want to smell flowers all day.  Unfortunately, people with this disorder often smell unpleasant things like burning rubber, chemicals, something rotting, or cigarette smoke.  Smell disorders are linked to other problems like: head trauma, brain tumors, nasal polyps, epilepsy, or even seasonal allergies.  Talk to your doctor today if you are experiencing signs of Phantosmia or other smell disorders. Did you ever eat bugs as a child?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  New research out of University of Wisconsin-Madison discovered the health benefits of consuming crickets.  You heard right, crickets.  Turns out, the little guys can help with gut health.  The study consisted of twenty men and women.  One group ate a normal breakfast, while the other added twenty-five grams of cricket powder to their breakfast.  Stool and blood samples were taken before and after a two-week period.  The group that ate the cricket powder had a healthier gut than those that didn’t.  Not only does cricket consumption help with gut health, scientists found that it also helps to fight inflammation.  You can find cricket powder and safe to eat crickets either online or at your local health food store.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are you pregnant?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Caffeine consumption has been deemed safe as long as mothers stay below 200mg per day.  But where you’re getting your caffeine may affect the health of your baby.  A new study out of University of Gothenburg has linked drinking coffee while pregnant to obese and overweight school aged children.  The research showed that even a cup or two a day can increase the chances of having an overweight child.  It is unclear whether or not it’s the coffee itself or the caffeine.  It’s possible it could be a mixture of both, since coffee tends to have a higher caffeine amount.  Talk to your doctor if you have questions about caffeine consumption during pregnancy.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you have allergies?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Nearly one in twenty people in the United States develop appendicitis.  This usually happens when the appendix becomes blocked.  You may be wondering what this has to do with allergies.  Well, a new study out of Lund University and Skåne University Hospital in Sweden has linked having allergies to a lower risk of complicated appendicitis.  The children in the study had pollen and animal fur allergies.  Scientists still aren’t sure why they have a lowered risk, but they think it may have something to do with the immune system.  Talk to your doctor if you experience pain in your right lower abdomen, a fever, and nausea or vomiting.  These could be symptoms of appendicitis and can become life threatening.   This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. We have long had tumor marker blood tests, but now there may be a new way to detect those cells. I’m talking about the cells that break off from a tumor and float through the blood stream. Researchers out of Stanford University School of Medicine have developed a magnetic wire that attracts these little cells and allows for tumor identification. The research hasn’t yet been tried in humans, but it seems to work well in mice. The key is to magnetize the tumor cells with nanoparticles. If they can find a way to do this through a FDA process, the wire may be able to detect the tumor cells more effectively and accurately.
