It’s time for another mental health check.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Major depressive disorder is one of the most common mental illnesses in the country.  New research from Amsterdam University Medical Center in the Netherlands found that people who struggle with major depressive disorder are biologically older than those without it.  The study consisted of eight hundred and eleven people with depression and three hundred and nineteen without.  Blood samples were taken to check their DNA.  According to the samples, participants with major depressive disorder were around eight months older than those without.  Scientists also found that childhood trauma or abuse accelerated the aging process even more.  Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of depression.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Apples make for a delicious year-round snack, but did you know that they also have anti-aging properties?  A new study out of University of Minnesota Medical School and the Mayo Clinic found that fruits such as apples and strawberries can help keep you from aging.  But how does it work?  Studies have shown that a process called cellular senescence plays an important role in aging.  When cells become old, they put out an inflammatory signal for the immune system to dispose of them.  This process slows down as we age, making it harder for the body to dispose of old cells.  A buildup of these cells leads to tissue degeneration and inflammatory issues.  It’s time to start picking apples over chips for a midnight snack!  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Learn why patients from around the globe trust Executive Medicine of Texas to their health. Visit EMTexas.com that’s EMTexas.com.

Do you drink?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  It was thought that a drink a day could provide some great health benefits.  However, new research says the dangers may outweigh the benefits.  A study out of Washington University School of Medicine found that even a small drink a day could negatively impact your health.  The study focused on the effects of alcohol on light drinkers.  The results weren’t good.  Researchers found that people who drank as little as four alcoholic drinks a week were at a twenty percent higher risk for premature death.  No one wants that.  It’s time to put down that drink, after all, it could slowly be killing you.  Talk to your doctor if you are showing symptoms of alcohol dependence. Are you a daytime napper?  I may have some good news for you.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  New research out of University of Bristol Medical School examined the effects of daytime napping on decision making.  The participants in the study were given two tasks.  The first task was given very briefly so the participants wouldn’t have time to process the information.  The second task consisted of something simple.  All the participants performed the tasks.  Afterwards, half took a ninety-minute nap while the others stayed awake.  They completed the tasks again and those that took a nap performed better.  Although, napping can be helpful, excessive napping can cause more damage than good.  Talk to your doctor if you experience excessive daytime sleepiness.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. What do diabetes and arthritis have in common?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Are you one of the hundred million people in the US struggling with diabetes?  If so, you may want to listen up.  A new study out of Nordsjaellands University Hospital found that diabetics are more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis.  Scientists working on the study believe that this link could be caused by chronic inflammation from high blood sugar.  They also found that diabetics who exercised regularly and ate well were less likely to develop the other conditions.  Looks like it is time to break out the workout clothes.  Talk to your doctor if you are a diabetic and concerned about arthritis or osteoporosis.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. 1 in 10 people in the US and Canada develop Diabetes type II. The good news is that diabetes can often be reversed with lifestyle change and weight loss. According to some doctors who wrote in BMJ Case Reports, intermittent fasting may be the answer to reversing this deadly disease. These doctors studied patients with known diabetes and placed them on intermittent fasting routines, either fasting for 24 hours every other day or 3 days per week. All of the study subjects were able to completely go off if insulin after ten months on the program.

When’s the last time you took a deep breath? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Have you ever noticed that when you get really busy or you’re stress you tend to hold your breath? Well, it’s common to hurry through the day and forget to stop and take some deep breaths. The body needs proper amounts of oxygen to function. Your brain needs it to think properly, your digestive system needs it to keep things moving, and even your immune system needs it to ward off colds and the flu. Maybe this explains why people who tend to meditate or take yoga have a healthier body overall. I want you each day to stop every hour on the hour (except when you’re asleep of course) and take in three really deep breaths – slow and easy. I bet this simple change will bring you great benefits.
