There’s nothing worse than having motion sickness. If you’ve been there, you know. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Motion sickness happens when your body loses its reference of stability. If you’re in a car or on a boat and feel that sudden wooziness, focus on something out in the distance that is stationary. This should help your body orientate again. If you’re prone to motion sickness, acupressure and ginger are always great and natural remedies. However, if your find yourself nauseated for no apparent reason, especially if that nausea lasts for more than a day or two, be sure to see your healthcare provider for a full physical exam. There’s one plant that you should always have growing at home. Any guesses on what that plant is? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. Aloe Vera is a great plant because it can grow outside in many climates, but it can also thrive in the kitchen window. Now, if you’re a cat owner, you will need to keep this out of the reach of your feline since it’s toxic to them. For us humans though, aloe vera is the perfect cure for a surface burn from cooking or even a sun burn. You can just cut off a small section of the plant, slice it down the middle of one side and then spread the gel inside over the affected area. Did you know that Aloe also has great benefits for your mouth? While you can’t eat it straight from your plant, aloe containing mouth washes are great for reducing plaque, freshening breath, and reducing inflammation of the gum line.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are you leading an active life? If so it may increase your longevity. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  You may have heard the term active life before and wondered what that means. Simply put, it means moving and doing. It doesn’t mean you have to be a star athlete, in fact some common daily activities can push you from inactive to active. It’s all about not taking the easy way out. Instead of looking for the closest parking space, park at the end of the isle and walk. If you’re a parent or grandparent, ditch the stroller and carry the kids. There’s no better exercise than lugging fifteen to thirty pounds around. If you’re a dog owner, change your strolls to brisk walks of jogs with your furry friend. Even household chores like washing windows, vacuuming and yard work help you stay active. Is city life making you old? Yes, and in more ways than one. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Living in the city can mean pollution, both noise pollution and air pollution. Noise pollution can interrupt sleep patterns and increase your risk for dementia and inflammation due to stress. Air pollution can affect your skin and cause deeper wrinkles, rashes, pimples, and even uneven skin tone. In one study, air pollution was linked to a 22% increase in dark spots that are often found on the face. If you’re not ready to move, there are some ways you can fight back. For noise pollution, good windows and thick drapes can help reduce sounds and light that may keep you awake. For your skin, serums that are high in vitamin C will help fight free radicals and reduce the effects of pollution. Do you know the fastest growing age group for heart attacks? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. If you’re like most people, you think that heart disease and heart attacks are for old overweight men. This faulty thinking has led to misdiagnosis and death in many cases. I bet you didn’t know that heart disease is the top cause of death in women. Or did you know that while heart attacks are on the decline overall, the fastest growing demographic is the under 40 group. Changes in diet, extreme stress, and lack of sleep all make this demographic a real target. The point is, that both men and women and those under 40 need to have regular physical exams and pay attention and report any symptoms, especially those associated with heat attacks. Do you use e-cigarettes? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Vaping, or also known as an e-cigarette, related deaths are on the rise in the US.  Originally, vaping was a tool designed to help wean smokers from cigarettes.  However, vaping has been heavily abused by teens, exposing them to the dangers of nicotine.  In fact, many states have increased the smoking age to 21- this includes e-cigarettes.  The FDA is currently investing over 120 cases of neurological issues, such has seizures, that have been linked to vaping--and according to the CDC, over 450 cases of serious lung illness have also been linked to vaping.  If you’re a parent, let your children know about the dangers of vaping.  And if you use e-cigarettes, talk to your doctor about how to wean yourself off.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Meat eaters, pescatarians, vegetarians, and vegans—listen up! This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  A new study published in BMJ looked at correlations between diet and risk factors for stroke and ischemic heart disease, or IHD.  They put participants into three different groups: meat eaters, pescatarians (the only meat they eat is fish), and vegetarians or vegans (plant-based diet).  The researchers found that pescatarians had a 13% lower risk of developing IHD than meat eaters.  Vegetarians had a 22% lower risk!  Shocker, right?  But here’s where it gets interesting.  Vegetarians had a 20% higher risk for stroke.  In the past, studies have argued that stroke risks were lower in vegetarians, but they were only looking at death related strokes.  So, which is the best diet?  Maybe a little bit of everything in moderation.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are you getting your exercise in?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  In today’s world, most jobs are sedentary, meaning more people spend time sitting than moving.  Well, Norwegian University of Science and Technology studied the health impacts of a sedentary lifestyle.  In the past, there had been numerous studies that linked inactivity to increased mortality.  However, this study was different.  Researchers wanted to know what happens when physical activity and behavior changes over time.  In other words, what happens someone who was once active stops.  They found that being inactive for 20 years can make someone twice as likely to die, especially of cardiovascular disease, earlier than someone who is active. So, what are you waiting for? Get moving! This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.
