Do you procrastinate? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. New research out of University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom found that chronic procrastination has been linked to low self-esteem and high levels of stress. Studies have also shown that people who put things off tend to have larger amygdalas- the part of the brain that processes anxiety and fear. Procrastination is essentially a double-edged sword. You procrastinate because you’re stressed and then stressed because you procrastinated. You can avoid this by making and completing task lists with finish by dates off to the side. You can also try breaking up the work over a few days instead of cramming it all into one. Remember to talk to your doctor if you are experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety. What does a cell phone game and Alzheimer’s have in common? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Diagnosing early Alzheimer’s can be difficult. That’s because the diagnosis mainly relies on signs of impaired memory. A new smartphone game developed by the University of East Anglia (UEA) and University College London in the U.K., and Deutsche Telekom uses special navigation to predict Alzheimer’s. The game was played by 27,000 participants. 30% of those participants carry the gene for Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers were able to distinguish which participants carried the gene by the way they played the game. Talk to your doctor if you or a loved one are experiencing symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease. Are you worried about hypertension? Turns out, the type of water you drink can have an impact on your blood pressure. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. In 2010, nearly 1.4 BILLION people worldwide were living with high blood pressure. That number continues to increase yearly. New research out of Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta, GA showed that drinking water with calcium and magnesium may lower blood pressure. How? Calcium and magnesium help to counteract the salinity in natural water sources. Although the research only showed a slight change in blood pressure, a slight change can have a drastic impact on your health long term. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about your blood pressure. This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Biopsies may soon be a thing of the past! The University of Michigan has developed a device that can detect cancer. It’s a wearable device that filters blood to find cancer cells. It essentially “scans” the blood cells to look for cancer. The device is also relatively small, measuring 2 by 2.75 by 1 inch. Researchers tested the device on dogs, and it worked! It’s estimated that the device will be available in 3 to 5 years after human clinical trials. When it comes to cancer, the earlier it is detected, the better. To catch cancer early, be sure to schedule your physicals yearly.
