What do you know about preventing colon cancer? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. One of the biggest myths about colon cancer is that it is an old man disease and that it can’t happen to you. That is simply not true. Not only does colon cancer effect both men and women, it is becoming a serious problem in younger populations. A study out of University of Texas and the MD Anderson Cancer Center shows that in 15 years, one in ten colon cancers will occur in people ages 20-34. Be sure to get your colonoscopies and pay special attention to your bowel habits. If you have a change in bowel habits or if you are experiencing rectal bleeding with either bright red blood or black tar like stools, see your physician and get scheduled for a colonoscopy. I know – colonoscopies are not fun, but trust me, neither is colon cancer. And remember, colon cancer is 99% preventable because almost all cancers start as a polyp that can be easily removed.
