Did you know that nearly one million people in the US are hospitalized a year because of pneumonia? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Most people view pneumonia as something only “old” people get. This isn’t true. Although age is a risk factor, it is not the end all be all. Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs and is the worldwide leading cause of death in children under age five. When symptoms begin, they often resemble the flu such as: chills, fever, cough, and weakness. But as the infection goes untreated, symptoms can worsen and patients can also develop chest pain. Most children under five have trouble voicing their symptoms. Call your doctor if you think you or child has pneumonia. If you are 65 or older talk to your doctor about the pneumonia vaccine.
