What do marijuana use and schizophrenia have in common? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Although still illegal in most states, marijuana is gaining popularity due to its health benefits. Past studies have shown that marijuana use can increase the risk of psychosis. The risk of this has always been relatively low. However, a new study out of Tel Aviv University in Israel shows that those with a family history of psychotic disorders are more likely to develop them with marijuana use. The study used mice as their test subjects. One of the groups included mice that were susceptible to schizophrenia. These mice, after being exposed to THC, were more likely to develop the disorder than those at normal risk. Always be honest and talk to your doctor if you use marijuana.
