Let’s talk antibiotics. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. It’s a common belief that the only way to treat cold or flu like symptoms is by taking antibiotics. This is NOT TRUE. In fact, antibiotics only protect against bacterial infections like sinusitis. Most cold and flu like symptoms are caused by viruses. Unfortunately, antibiotics do not work on viral infections. You may be thinking that you would rather have the antibiotics “just in case”. Think again! Antibiotics kill the good bacteria in your gut, causing the bad bacteria to surface. When this happens, it can put you at risk for all kinds of unwanted infections that may lead to hospital visits. It is important to see your doctor if you are sick, but don’t be surprised if you leave without a prescription for antibiotics.
