#2—Did you know that by the age of 60, most men and women will have lost about half their taste buds. Since our sense of taste helps us identify spoilage, seniors need to be extra careful with leftovers. Over time our taste buds dull by become less sensitive. This is probably why older folks need much more intense flavoring in order to be able to fully appreciate a dish, and retirement homes will sometimes “spike” their food with a bit of sugar or salt to intensify the taste for their crowd.
