Today we have Dr. BJ Lee from Irving Orthopedics in the studio with us and we are talking about common orthopedic issues with the hand, wrist, and shoulder.
He completed his undergraduate work and his Medical Degree at Stanford University. He also completed residency at Brown and then went on to obtain a hand fellowship at the University of Chicago.
Why did you chose this occupation?
A good doctor is one who has a love for people and for medicine, let’s talk just a minute about the philanthropic work you have done with Hurricane Katrina and with hand deformities in children in Lima Peru.
What is your most interesting case? Rotator cuff tear
-very common with increasing age
-not all tears symptomatic
-Tears rarely heal on their own and often progress with time
-most tears can be repaired arthroscopically

-most common peripheral nerve compression syndrome (2nd is cubital tunnel syndrome)
-symptoms numbness, weakness and pain
-chronic and severe disease can lead to permanent changes if not addressed in timely fashion
-different surgical techniques, open, mini-open; I do endoscopic technique using camera
-common cause of wrist pain
-common in new mothers
-treatment with bracing, steroid
