MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK

IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

The new study - published in the journal Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology shows that extra virgin olive oil may do wonders for Alzheimer’s prevention. In the study, they genetically modified rodents to have the 3 characteristics of Alzheimers - memory impairment, the buildup of amyloid plaques, and neurofibrillary tangles. They divided the rodents and fed extra virgin olive oil to one set and not to the other. IN the rodents that were fed extra virgin olive oil, had improvement in the integrity of the synapses - which are the parts of the brain cell that facilitate communication among neurons - was preserved much better in the olive oil group. Secondly, the brain tissue in the mice fed olive oil revealed a "dramatic increase" in the autophagy activation of the nerve cells.

Autophagy is a process that sees nerve cells disintegrate and eliminate the toxic debris that tends to accumulate between the cells. In this experiment, the increase in autophagy led to a decrease in the amyloid plaques and phosphorylated tau.
