Do you expect everything that is FDA approved to be safe? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Research out of Brigham and Women's Hospital found that for drugs approved by the FDA between the years of 2001 and 2010, almost 1 in 3 had a safety event after it went to market. The researchers looked at drugs that were taken off the market completely, a black box warning or FDA issuance of some sort of safety communication. They found that of 222 novel therapeutics the FDA approved during this time period, three were withdrawn, 61 received boxed warnings and 59 elicited safety communications. This is significant. Remember, when drugs are studied they are not studied in every person and every circumstance and they can only seek approval on data they were able to gather. So, try to avoid prescription medications by making healthy choices and staying well! Get started making healthier choices today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Did you know that chronic inflammation can lead to a slew of serious health issues? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Chronic inflammation can be brought on by drinking, smoking, eating fried foods or eating packaged and processed foods. Even stress can cause it. When we put our bodies on high alert by making unhealthy choices, we create free radicals, atoms with in the body that are unbalanced and are missing an electron. Then, those free radicals steal from our healthy cells, creating a domino effect. This is what causes disease and ages us prematurely. On the flip side, anti-oxidants that can be found in things like colorful fruits and vegetables and salmon, provide anti-oxidants.  Anti-oxidants are givers. So focus on giving more to your body and warding off those robbers by making healthy choices each day. There's so much to know about living healthy... and that's why you can find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Did you know that sunscreen may actually inhibit your production of Vitamin D? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. People who suffer from auto-immune diseases like Lupus and Celiac disease are already at a disadvantage when it comes to keeping their vitamin D levels at adequate levels. New research from College of Osteopathic Medicine at Touro University California suggests that sunscreen use on patients as well as those with diabetes, contributes to nearly 1 million cases of vitamin D deficiency internationally. According to the research, sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher can reduce the body's vitamin D-3 production by 99 percent. But we all know we need sunscreen to prevent skin cancer, so their recommendation is to spending 5 to 30 minutes in midday sun twice each week, without sunscreen. Do you know the symptoms of a thyroid disorder? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The thyroid is a gland in the neck, close to your Adams apple. It’s shaped like a butterfly, and although it’s small, it’s very important. Many people lose weight or gain weight, suffer from a rapid heart beat, are moody or fatigued and don’t know why. If you suffer from these or other odd or sudden symptoms, ask your doctor to check your thyroid. Not only should it be physically examined, there are basic labs like TSH, T3 and T4 that can show if the thyroid is functioning properly. The thyroid produces hormones and just like other hormones in the body, they transmit signals to the body on how to behave and how to regulate. If you feel as though somethings not right – schedule an appointment with your doctor today. There's so much to know about living healthy... and that's why you can find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. This show is all about tips and tricks to packing a better lunch for a healthy and happy workday. We tend to pack either foods we don't like at all, and will avoid for the vending machines later---or we choose foods that are pre-packaged and full of nitrates and sugar. Finding a balance that works is the goal and this show will make it crystal clear for you. We break it down item by item, and dispel myths of foods we all THINK are healthy, but really bust your diet!

The type of sunglasses you wear makes a difference. This is Judy Gaman and this is your medical minute. Sunglasses may make you look cool, but if you have the right kind, they will also protect your eyes from damage from the sun and keep the skin around your eyes from wrinkling. Yes, it’s true, our eyes age too and often too soon. When you buy your shades, be sure to look at the label or check for a sticker on the front of the lens. You want to purchase a pair that says it blocks 100% of the UV rays, anything less is not sufficient. Cheap sunglasses will actually cost you more in the long run because they don’t protect your retina. Even if it’s cloudy, be sure to wear your sunglasses, the glare that makes you squint is the same glare that ages your eyes.  You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics. Want to know the two things that age you the fastest? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Nobody wants to age, especially when the years are evident on your face. Too much money is spent on anti-aging creams, when the basics of good nutrition, exercise, and a healthy diet are missed. There are also two things that age you faster than anything else. The first on is smoking. You don’t even have to be the one inhaling, just living with a smoker can add years to your face. Vaping is not much better, so skip the tobacco and nicotine altogether. The second one is missing sleep. Getting at least 7 and a half hours of sleep per night will help ward off the signs of aging, while less will leave you with dark circles, dull eyes, and an overall look of unhealthiness. Need a better night’s rest? Try keeping the room cool and dark and follow a strict routine. Are you exercising too much? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Exercise is a vital part of staying healthy and living a long life. We need exercise to properly digest our food, have mental clarity, and balance our hormones, but too much of a good thing – is a bad thing. Be sure that your exercise routine includes at least one day of rest per week. The body needs time to repair and recuperate. If you overdo it, by exercising too much or for too many days in a row, you’re risk of injury, illness, and irritability go up. I suggest that you also rotate your exercise and incorporate gentle yoga or something similar on one day, and then be sure you have one day of complete rest and relaxation. Because you can control your health and your future.
