How much time do you spend surfing the net? Are you dependent on the internet for all your answers to questions? Maybe you can’t stand to go a day or even an hour without checking your social media accounts. You may be addicted. That’s right, you can get addicted to the internet and the result may be mental health deterioration in either stress, anxiety or depression. A new study from Canada showed a direct correlation between internet use and poor mental health. One thing they didn’t determine was if the internet use caused the mental health issue or if the mental health issue caused the internet addiction. Really? Do we need a study to determine that? I bet your guess is the same as mine. So – get off the internet and become more mindful of your day. My guess is that your mental health will improve.

Leave it to Finland to find a connection between reading skills and nutritional intake. Researchers studied children in the first and third grade and found that there was a direct correlation with higher reading levels and the amount of vegetables, fruits, fish, and whole grains they consumed. On the contrary, those that ate sugary foods, red meats, and processed carbs did not fair so well. It leaves me to think that children in the US are so far from their actual learning potential. Imagine what they could do if everyone incorporated a healthy diet at home and at school.

Doesn’t it seem like food allergies have skyrocketed? Some researchers put two and two together and decided that maybe we should go back to giving more food varieties earlier in the growth process. In other words, waiting until after a year of age to introduce things like eggs and peanuts may actually make the allergy more prevalent. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association eggs should be introduced between 4-6 months and peanuts between 4-11 months. According to the study, early introduction could head off 24 cases of egg allergy per 1,000 and 18 cases of peanut allergy per 1,000. It will be interesting to see how getting back to basic common sense parenting will help us fix some of these problems we have inadvertently created through the process of overthinking.

Every day we learn more about our genetic makeup and how what we are coded for can influence our health. You may have heard about the FTO gene, or the fat gene. People who have this gene have a higher incidence of obesity. However, new research published in the British Medical Journal suggests that the FTO gene does not quality for an excuse for being overweight. It turns out that people who have the gene, react to proper nutrition and exercise, the same way that people who don’t have the gene do. Having the gene does not mean that you are destined to extra pounds, it just means you have to work a little harder to be healthy and trim.

We are always harping that we need to avoid processed carbohydrates, but its worth mentioning that other seemingly healthy snacks can contain too much sugar and pack on the pounds as well.  For example, dried fruit can lose its nutritional value and leave you with too much sugar. Did you know that the drying process takes 30-80% of the vitamins and nutrients away from the fruit? Because it’s dried, we tend to eat more of it. So be sure to check the sugar content and serving size. Also, look to be sure the packaging company hasn’t added more sugar. Finding pure fruit and eating it in moderation is the key.
