THAT MUSIC MEANS IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

Fasting boosts stem cells and new research out of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) shows that Age-related declines in stem cell function can be reversed by a 24-hour fast. The study was done on mice of all ages, but found that regardless of age, a 24 hour fast had a dramatic health benefit. They found evidence that fasting helps the intestinal cells repair themselves, something that is usually harder to do as we age. This may lead to new medications that mimic the fasting process for those who are unable to fast, such as diabetics.

Sciatic—what? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Are you experiencing pain through the buttock and down the leg?  If so, you may be experiencing sciatica.  Around 40% of the population will or has suffered from sciatica at least once.  The Sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and runs from your lower back, through the buttock, and down the leg.  Often times sciatica is not just a diagnosis, but a symptom of something more serious.  Herniated disks are the most common cause.  When the sciatic nerve is pinched, it can cause shooting pain and numbness down the leg.  It is important to remember that numbness and tingling can be a sign of something else so it is important to talk to your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of sciatica.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are you a big tea drinker?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  If you aren’t a fan of green tea, this study may change your mind.  All teas -black, green, and white- have a chemical called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG for short).  Although it is found in all teas, it is the most prevalent in green tea.   Research out of Lancaster University and the University of Leeds found a link between EGCG and lowered risk of Atherosclerosis.  Atherosclerosis is the buildup of plaque in the arteries.  So, that cup of green tea could actually be helping your heart.  It is also believed that EGCG can lower risk of Alzheimer’s Disease, but more studies need to be completed.  If you aren’t a fan of green tea by itself, try adding a little honey to cut the bitterness.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Thinking of taking an extra block around the park?  Do it! This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  A new study published in The British Journal of Sports Medicine explored the health benefits of walking.  This study was one of a kind.  With a lead researcher from University of Sydney, the study spanned over two continents and included five different learning institutions.  The study consisted of surveys from over 50,000 experienced walkers.  They found that the faster you walk, the longer you will live.  In fact, brisk walkers were 21% more likely to live a longer life.  Like those odds? I do! If you want to live longer, try walking between 3.1 to 4.3 miles per hour for at least two hours a week.  It’s never too late to start!  In fact, people over the age of 60 experience the highest benefits of walking.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Nausea got you down?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  If you are struggling with nausea, you may want to try some of these home remedies.  Ginger is known to ease nausea.  Although, you probably shouldn’t head straight to the soda section at your local store.  Ginger sodas are full of sugar—which won’t help your stomach.  Instead, try ginger oil or ginger candies.  Peppermint can also help an upset stomach.  Before buying peppermint candies, make sure that they actually contain peppermint.  Mint teas are also a good option.  If your nausea is linked to anxiety, you may want to try lavender oils.  Lavender is known for its’ calming effects.  You can either put it in an oil diffusor or a dab a drop behind your ears and on your palms.  If you are pregnant, talk to your doctor before trying these options.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are you a drinker?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. A study published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation has linked heavy and binge drinking to Alzheimer’s Disease.  Although multiple studies have been completed in the past, new research has been able to address how alcohol is affecting the brain itself.  Scientists at University of Illinois at Chicago found that heavy drinking destroys protective mechanisms on the brain.  The mechanisms are in charge of protecting the brain from outside damage.  This degradation leads to inflammation of the brain.  The inflammation leads to a pile up of a protein called amyloid beta.  This protein is responsible for creating obstructive clusters that lead to Alzheimer’s Disease.  Talk to your doctor if you think you may have a drinking problem.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.
