 Breast cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer death in women (lung cancer is first)
 The chance of a woman dying of breast cancer is 1 in 36
 Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1989 as a result of screening and awareness
 At this time there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States

Doc Shock
Some new research may have uncovered the link between PPIs that many people use for heartburn, like Nexium and Prilosec and health issues. Previously, there was a correlation, but not a proof of cause between PPIs and heart disease, kidney disease, and dementia. Now, Dr. John P. Cooke at Houston Methodist Research Institute, TX says it may be due to the molecular changes that take place
when acid is basically eliminated. Turns out that use of such drugs causes premature vascular aging.

Do you suffer from erectile dysfunction? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. 52% of men suffer from erectile dysfunction—according to the Cleveland Clinic.  A 2011 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition may have found one reason why.  Turns out, there may be a link to between dehydration and erectile dysfunction.  Symptoms of dehydration include: dry mouth, dizziness, thirst, fatigue, and dark urine.  It is important to drink half of your body weight in ounces a day.  Not only can it help you in the bedroom, it also helps with mental clarity.  Dehydration is not the only cause of erectile dysfunction, so it is important to talk to your doctor if you suffer from symptoms.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are your breasts asymmetrical?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  A 2015 study published in Libertas Academica found that women with asymmetrical breasts were more likely to develop breast cancer.  Before you begin to panic, a little asymmetry is normal.  Menopause, menstrual cycles, breastfeeding, and the use of birth control pills can cause breast asymmetry.   However, if your breasts vary in size of about 20%, you may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer.  A mammogram can determine the cause of asymmetry.  It is recommended that women ages 40-55 have a mammogram every year.  After 55, every 1-2 years is recommended.  It is important to talk to your doctor if you notice any changes in your breasts.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Loma Linda University has just made many new friends as they published research that dark chocolate actually reduces stress and improves cognition, immunity, and mood. They key is to eat chocolate that has at least 70% cacao (pronounced ca-cow).  Cacao regulates cellular immune response, neural signaling, and sensory perception. For many years, doctors have known that dark chocolate improves mood and the flavonoids in dark chocolate seem to be good for overall health, but this is the first in a scientific study that outlines exactly why it is good and how it works. Keep in mind that milk chocolate will not have the same affect, it has to be dark, very dark chocolate, look for 70% or greater on the label.

Do you expect everything that is FDA approved to be safe? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Research out of Brigham and Women's Hospital found that for drugs approved by the FDA between the years of 2001 and 2010, almost 1 in 3 had a safety event after it went to market. The researchers looked at drugs that were taken off the market completely, a black box warning or FDA issuance of some sort of safety communication. They found that of 222 novel therapeutics the FDA approved during this time period, three were withdrawn, 61 received boxed warnings and 59 elicited safety communications. This is significant. Remember, when drugs are studied they are not studied in every person and every circumstance and they can only seek approval on data they were able to gather.
