In the U.S., colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of death from cancer among women and the second in men, mostly due to our diets. The American Cancer Society estimate that in 2017, more than 95,500 people will develop cancer of the colon. BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine published a study showing the colon cancer preventing properties of our old friend Resveratrol. It appears that Resveratrol, along with Grape seed extract are good at promoting bacterial diversity, but also preventing chronic diseases and eliminating the colon cancer stem cells.

What if I told you the secret to longevity is free and always available? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. People are always reaching for anything to help them live longer and healthier lives. Research shows that one of the biggest indicators for a longer life is prayer or meditation. Now we know why. A study using functional MRI looked at the brains of monks who were deep in prayer and meditation and found that a part of their brain that is usually at rest is actually lit up. This could explain why cultures that pray or meditate have not only more years, but more healthy years. Ever wonder why some smokers have an easier time quitting the nasty habit than others? Well, a new research study from Duke Medicine followed 85 smokers, taking MRI scans of their brains before and after kicking the habit. 44 of the smokers were successful, while 41 relapsed. The smokers who had success had MRI scans that showed a better connection between the insula, the part of the brain that controls urges and cravings, and the somatosensory cortex, a part of the brain that controls motor function.

Men and women seem to approach better health differently. Let’s see if you fit the typical scenario. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. While everyone needs to go to the doctor and have their annual examination, what drives them to go is often different. For men, they tend to go if something is bothering them, usually related to energy or libido. They may either make the appointment or their wife may make it for them. Women almost always make their own appointments and are more likely to go for prevention purposes as well as for health issues. Is it time for your yearly exam? What will be your motivation? There's so much to know about living healthy... and that's why you can find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Let us help you live better, live longer! Join me, at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM.

A person’s face says a lot about them. Do you know what your face says about you? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. University of Toronto found that people can identify with rather remarkable success if a person is wealthy or poor by looking at their face. Now the faces they looked at had no expression. Turns out the muscles on a face when at rest look differently based on life experiences. Because people don’t want to be judged, they suggest that you smile. Smiling is universal and lifts the muscle in to a place where people can’t tell anything about your socioeconomic class and instead see straight through to your heart. Did you know exercise decreases pain from arthritis? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. There are number of different things you can take for arthritis pain, but the one of the best ways to control arthritic pain is actually free. Did you know that low-impact to moderate levels of exercise can help? It’s true and research has shown that water aerobics is a great way to achieve this, not only does it decrease pain, it increases mobility and range of motion. Even though your symptoms from arthritis may make you want to stay on the couch, it’s so important that you resist that urge and get moving instead. IF you don’t have access to a pool, just go for walks and stretch each morning and evening. You will be amazed at how much better you feel.
