As consumers we spend millions if not billions of dollars on skin creams. Did you know that the best way to heal your skin is from the inside-out? Good skin starts with what you put in your mouth. Foods that are high in omega 3, like salmon and cold water fish, will give you that young heathy glow. Make sure you’re getting enough oil and fat in your diet. Extra virgin olive oil that has not been heated and avocados are perfect choices. And don’t forget, a hydrated face has less wrinkles and more moisture. Be sure to drink the right amount of water for your weight. The rule of thumb is half your body weight in ounces. So, if your’e 200 lbs, you need 100 ounces of water a day. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. When it comes to smoothies, the color matters. What color is your smoothie? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Are you a green or red smoothie fan? Red smoothies are usually high in anti-oxidants and fiber because they’re filled with berries. Berries are good, but red smoothies are often filled with too much sugar. Green smoothies, made from leafy green veggies may not be quite as tasty, but they’re much better for you because they contain high levels of magnesium, the fourth most abundant mineral in the body. Magnesium is important for healthy muscles, nerves, and a strong heart. If you like a smoother smoothie, add a half an avocado to thicken your green smoothie up. Avocados are great source of good fat which is important for cognition. There's so much to know about living healthy... and that's why you can find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK

IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

The new study - published in the journal Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology shows that extra virgin olive oil may do wonders for Alzheimer’s prevention. In the study, they genetically modified rodents to have the 3 characteristics of Alzheimers - memory impairment, the buildup of amyloid plaques, and neurofibrillary tangles. They divided the rodents and fed extra virgin olive oil to one set and not to the other. IN the rodents that were fed extra virgin olive oil, had improvement in the integrity of the synapses - which are the parts of the brain cell that facilitate communication among neurons - was preserved much better in the olive oil group. Secondly, the brain tissue in the mice fed olive oil revealed a "dramatic increase" in the autophagy activation of the nerve cells.

Autophagy is a process that sees nerve cells disintegrate and eliminate the toxic debris that tends to accumulate between the cells. In this experiment, the increase in autophagy led to a decrease in the amyloid plaques and phosphorylated tau.

Companies and individuals are spending a fortune on healthcare costs. Are the corporate wellness initiatives worth it? The research says so. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. You’ve heard it before, sitting is the new smoking. On average, we sit nine to ten hours of the day. This inactivity is linked to just about every disease out there, including diabetes and cancer. Corporate wellness initiatives that help employees track steps and hold them accountable for 7-10 thousand steps a day could double or triple their investment over time. Companies to focus on multi-tasking and hitting deadlines regardless of health risks only end up losing in the end. Listen up corporate America. Don’t be a loser, be a winner For more unique and useful health information on more than 100 different topics, visit STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM where you can also find my book, Aged to Perfection, How to Thrive to 100, Happy Healthy & Wise. When’s the last time you had a bowl of oatmeal? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Most Americans are lacking enough fiber in their diet. Are you one of them? Maybe it’s time to change your morning routine and include oatmeal. The Brits think so. The British Medical Journal published a study showing that increasing your fiber intake by 10 grams was associated with a 15 percent lower risk of mortality. Want to really ramp up the fiber? Add some flax seeds and raspberries to your oatmeal. You’ve heard of probiotics, those good bacteria that live in your gut, well they need something to eat too. They eat prebiotics, which generally are sources of fiber. Heal your gut, heal your whole body. Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics. Your body will thank you, for visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM.

Listen up girls. How much sleep are you getting? I bet it’s not enough. Some pains require immediate attention. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Most women in the United States are drastically sleep deprived. If you’re only getting 6 hours a night, you’re missing 45 hours per month. This triples your risk for heart disease. Cut that sleep back to 4 hours a night and it doubles the chance that you’ll die of heart disease. Need another reason to make sleep a priority? Cutting back on sleep decreases your levels for leptin, a hormone that regulates hunger. Without leptin, we over eat and gain weight. You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics. Did you know that healthy fat is good fat? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Fat has gotten such a bad rap over the years, probably because theirs too much bad fat found in our packaged and processed foods. Unfortunately, people have gone overboard and thrown out the good fats too. Good fats are the ones we need to keep our brains working and our bodies in good health. Make sure your have these good fats on your grocery list: Coconut oil, avocados, nuts, and even unsalted real butter. That’s right – I said butter, not a lot but a little and never buy that “fake butter” that’s filled with unhealthy oils. There's so much to know about living healthy... and that's why you can find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Have you ever paid attention to what and how much you drink each day? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Most people count the calories they eat but ignore the calories they drink. What you drink may be just as responsible for those extra pounds as what’s on your plate. If you’re a juice drinker, you could be putting yourself at risk for developing diabetes. A cup of orange juice is the same as eating four oranges. Even bottled ice teas can be loaded with sugar. I recently saw a green tea with 36 grams of sugar! Be smart, read labels. Drinking water is great and I even think adding fruit or cucumber slices to flavor the water is a great idea. Drink to stay hydrated, not to fill up.
